Ryan Reynolds gives a hilarious reason for why he’s so mean to Hugh Jackman all the time. Reynolds and Jackman have an ongoing fake feud that’s been running for many years now, much to the delight of their respective fanbases. The two actors worked together on X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009, Jackman playing his iconic role of Wolverine and Reynolds playing an earlier, less-developed version of Deadpool. Reynolds stars in the two recently released movies, Free Guy and The Adam Project.

There are a number of reasons for the joke feud, the obvious one being that Reynolds and Jackman are good friends who like each other’s sense of humor.  When the standalone movie Deadpool aired in 2016, Reynolds created a wildly successful version of the red-clothed assassin with super healing abilities. Now that he had his own franchise similar to Jackman’s long-running portrayals of Wolverine, Reynolds started teasing Jackman publicly, asking him to come make a Wolverine cameo. Both fictional characters have super healing abilities, which is likely another reason for the jokes. Their respective Marvel characters would be perfectly matched in a fight.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In an interview on Yahoo Entertainment (via Comic Book), Reynolds gave a long-winded rant on why he’s so mean to Hugh Jackman when asked by kid reporters Lyla and Luna. He hilariously implied that it was Jackman’s idea to name his own 2017 movie The Greatest Showman and that ever since, Jackman has been insisting that everyone call him by that title, including young, impressionable children. Reynolds quipped, “why not just call the movie Super Awesome Hugh Jackman?” It was the perfect response, yet one more dig at his fellow Marvel star’s ego. Read Reynolds’ full response below:

“I know for a fact he’s the one who named that movie … ‘The Greatest Showman.’ Why not just call the movie Super Awesome Hugh Jackman? … I think it’s pathetic and disgusting that he called the movie that. And I think it’s pathetic and disgusting that he insists people call him ‘The Greatest Showman’ everywhere he goes, including you, just young, impressionable kids. Goodness gracious.”

Another aspect of the Wolverine/Deadpool feud is that both actors have been promoting their respective brands and businesses, particularly their sponsored beverage brands. Reynolds has promoted the product Aviation Gin, which he has ties to, and Jackman started the Laughing Man Coffee brand, which has a philanthropic arm aimed at reducing poverty. This created yet another hilarious chapter in the feud when Reynolds posted a video congratulating Jackman on his charitable and delicious coffee brand in what he thought was a truce on the feud, only to see Jackman respond with a video of himself pouring out a bottle of Aviation Gin onto the ground and calling Reynolds a “complete ***hole.

The comedically self-aware nature of the character Deadpool makes him the perfect basis for an ongoing meta-feud that alternates off and on the screen. In the 2016 movie, Deadpool, that rebooted the character with Reynolds having much more creative control, old fans were delighted and new fans were surprised at how often Deadpool broke the fourth wall and talked directly to the audience. This is an ongoing tradition from the Deadpool comics, and it’s the perfect outlet for Reynolds to shine in his stream-of-consciousness style of humor. In the finale of the movie, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) pulls off his red mask only to find a paper cut-out of Hugh Jackman‘s face stapled to his own face. The joke potential is endless as Ryan Reynolds showed this week, and more feud jokes are surely in store between the duo.
