Ryan Reynolds has once again poked fun at 2011’s Green Lantern, calling it an inappropriate film for kids to watch while joking that Deadpool is acceptable instead. Reynolds starred as airforce pilot turned galactic enforcer Hal Jordan in the poorly received DC movie. He would later go on to star in the significantly more well received Deadpool in 2016, where he’d famously poke fun at the prior movie.

Before Reynolds solidified himself as Wade Wilson in the eyes of comic book movie fans, the star made a less fondly remembered impression in 2011 when he brought Green Lantern to the big screen. Starring as the titular hero, Reynolds’ Hal Jordan came across the fatally wounded Green Lantern Abin Sur (Temuera Morrison), who gifts Jordan his power ring before passing, setting him on a journey that sees Hal become the latest Green Lantern to stand against an incredibly powerful entity fueled by fear. Green Lantern failed critically and financially, and though Reynolds himself was more optimistic about the film following his first rewatch since its release, the actor still enjoys poking fun at the DC movie both in his work and outside of it, leading to a very interesting recommendation in a recent interview.

Reynolds once again mocked the movie when interviewed by children reporters Lyla and Luna about his Netflix new movie, The Adam Project. In the interview, hosted by Yahoo, one of the kids asked whether they were old enough to watch Deadpool, stating their father told them to ask Reynolds his thoughts. While Reynolds joked that it was alright for them to view the R-rated superhero movie, one of the young interviewers stated their father said they couldn’t watch Green Lantern, a suggestion Reynolds enthusiastically agreed with, stating that they’d have to be 40 to watch it. Check out the interaction below.

“- Can we watch “Deadpool?” Daddy said to ask you.

Ryan Reynolds: Oh, OK. How old are you both?

 I’m nine.

 I’m six and 1/2.

Reynolds: Oh, yeah, you’re fine to watch “Deadpool.” No problem.

He said we definitely can’t watch “Green Lantern.”

Reynolds: No, do not watch that. You are not old enough for that. If you’re, like, roughly late 40s, you can watch “Green Lantern.” You’ll be ready for it then.”

Reynolds revealed why he jokes about Green Lantern in a previous interview, explaining how important it was to him to look back on the experience in a humorous way. When being interviewed about Free Guy in October 2020, Reynolds explained that he first felt comfortable making fun of Green Lantern when writing a joke for Deadpool. Taika Waititi, who starred in Green Lantern alongside Reynolds, also revealed he shares a similar perspective on the film, choosing to embrace the movie’s questionable reputation through humor rather than let it linger as something to be ashamed of.

While Reynold’s Deadpool suggestion should probably not be taken to heart, his Green Lantern comment adds another chapter in the ongoing saga of the film’s strange legacy. Some actors – like George Clooney in regards to Batman & Robin – look back on failed projects in shame, with Clooney having famously shared his distaste for the 1997 film. For Reynolds, however, he has embraced the film, even using it to enrich his current works going forward through pointed jabs.
