Ryan Reynolds offers an update on development of his Clue movie adaptation, expressing uncertainty that it will ever get made due to the Disney-Fox acquisition. First released in 1949 in the UK before coming to North America from Parker Brothers/Hasbro, the board game puts players in the midst of a murder mystery and tasked with determining which of the six suspects conducted the murder, the weapon used and the location of the crime. Clue has become a cultural phenomenon since coming to the states, spawning various licensed and updated editions as well as a TV series, musical and video games.

The franchise most notably expanded to the big screen with the 1985 film Clue, which starred an ensemble cast including Tim Curry, Eileen Brennan, Collen Camp, Christopher Lloyd and Michael McKean, amongst others. Though a financial failure and met with mixed reviews upon release, it has since gone on to garner a cult following and a new adaptation has languished in development hell for over a decade, first beginning at Universal Studios with Gore Verbinski set to direct until Hasbro partnered with Fox in 2016. The most recent efforts saw Ryan Reynolds sign on to star and produce under his first-look deal with the studio in 2018 and Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick set to script and Jason Bateman in talks to direct, star and help with the script, only for James Bobin to enter talks to direct early last year.

Just in time for the release of Free Guy, Reynolds spoke with Collider to discuss his latest action comedy and a number of upcoming projects. One such film is his adaptation of Clue, which Reynolds expressed uncertainty that it will ever get made due to Disney purchasing Fox but held out hope for it to be made one day as well as the chance to reunite with Bateman at some point. See what Reynolds said below:

“I don’t know if we’re ever going to end up ever getting that made. It’s one of those things that in the shuffle of Disney acquiring Fox, I’m not sure we’ll ever get to, but we’ll see hopefully down the road. I love Jason Bateman, I couldn’t be a bigger Jason Bateman fan, so if it’s not this, it’ll be something else that we hopefully get to work on down the road.”

While some solace can be taken in the fact that Clue wasn’t one of the many films to be canceled in the wake of Disney’s acquisition of Fox, Reynolds’ apprehension about the project’s future will come as a bit of a disappointment. Unlike his new film Free Guy, development on the murder mystery adaptation was slow going even prior to the merger and with the inability to lock Bateman down for the directing/co-starring position and no confirmation of Bobin as the film’s director has put it in an unfortunate limbo. Additionally, given the increasingly busy schedule of Reynolds and Fox beginning development on a series adaptation of Clue, signs do seem to be pointing towards the film’s demise.

That being said, Reynolds’ continued desire to make Clue and reunite with Bateman in the future could be just enough for the project to retain its life. Given the former is currently working with the Disney-owned Marvel Studios for Deadpool 3 and Free Guy is receiving highly positive reviews and expected to bring a good box office haul in its open weekend, Reynolds could very well use his pull to get the film made. Additionally, with Bateman’s scheduling conflicts stemming from production on the final season of Ozark, which is expected to conclude in October, his dance card could very well open up to return to the project.
