It left a big void in Destiny 2′s universe when Bungie killed off Cayde-6 for the Forsaken expansion – one that wasn’t filled until Season of Dawn’s Saint-14. A legendary character in Destiny 2′s lore, Saint-14 also turned out to be both kind-hearted and charming enough to fill the Cayde’s role. He’s now Destiny 2′s best character, but fans are worried he’ll be gone soon.

Originally portrayed by Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle), Cayde-6 was the Destiny series’ most likable character by far, with well-delivered, genuinely funny dialogue. His death at Destiny 2: Forsaken’s launch left only Ikora, Zavala, and a supporting cast of vendors to keep Guardians company in the Tower. Gambit’s The Drifter and the Crucible’s Shaxx, each with a different twist on a sort of “very encouraging gym teacher” personality, provide a good bit of levity to counter Ikora and Zavala’s stoic attitudes, but they don’t feel like friends in the same way Cayde did.

Enter Saint-14, a Titan players saved from death inside the Vex’s maze of timelines during Destiny 2′s Season of Dawn. Originally killed after fighting Vex for centuries in Mercury’s Infinite Forest, Saint-14’s return to everyday life is full of wonder at the current state of the Tower and the Last City. This brings a warmth to his dialogue most wouldn’t expect from someone with a reputation for being one of the greatest warriors ever. And there’s humor in his sincerity, too. At his vendor station in the Tower, he tells Guardians the difference between holding a bird and holding a gun (he loves pigeons), and he mentions planning pranks on Shaxx and Zavala. Some of his other dialogue may be a bit overly dramatic, and his Russian-ish accent is questionable, but he’s got the heart and personality to make up for it.

But some Destiny 2 players think Saint-14 won’t be around for long. Fans like Reddit user Domsou believe Saint-14 has only been “borrowed” from his original timeline, and he’ll need to die so another timeline’s player-controlled Guardians can deliver his signature shotgun to past-him, once again. Recent events support this possibility: The Corridors of Time mystery solution featured a scene of Saint-14 giving a eulogy at the site of the player Guardian’s grave. Perhaps he will end up sacrificing his life to save players from whatever evil would put them in the coffin.

Saint-14’s departure would also line up with Bungie’s strategy for the future of Destiny 2. In year three, Bungie aimed to create seasons that change the game world, rather than continually add to it. The goal is to make content that allows players to say, “I was there when…” Despite all the voice acting and animation work that went into bringing Saint-14 to life, it’s easy to imagine Bungie wants to create an “I was there when Saint-14 came back” moment. Sadly, if this is the case, Destiny 2 would need to once again kill off its best character. Here’s hoping the player and Saint-14 can once again cheat death.
