Samsung’s new bean-shaped buds are the successor to its Galaxy Buds+, making them a natural upgrade for those already convinced by Samsung’s audio efforts. Although the superb sound quality of the Bose SoundSport Free wireless earphones might make the decision a bit more complicated.

One of the biggest changes with the latest Galaxy wireless earbuds is the switch to a design that sits inside the ear after being tucked in, instead of inserted like an earplug. Despite their odd shape, the Galaxy Buds Live still pack some serious improvements over their predecessors, such as better overall battery life, improved Bixby voice integration, and the addition of Active Noise Cancellation. In fact, the Galaxy Buds Live’s lengthy battery life alone, greatly outlasts contenders that cost almost twice as much.

While neither buds have tracking features as intricate as Skullcandy’s Tile-equipped earphones, both pairs share common ground in being able to pinpoint the location of where they were last activated via their respective smartphone apps. As for the sound, audiophiles looking for the best possible quality on a pair of true wireless earbuds should lean towards Bose, as the company is known for having some of the best sound signatures around. The SoundSport Free’s added water-resistance also favors avid gym goers, while some might find its tactile physical buttons more responsive than Samsung’s touch-based solution.

Of course, Bose’s $200 price tag is likely to be a major hurdle for many consumers. The Galaxy Buds Live offer more modern features, like ANC and longer battery, and all for $30 less. Casual users are also likely to favor Samsung’s earbuds due to their convenient and easy pairing system and voice-operated Bixby benefits. The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live’s looks might not be as eye-catching as Razer’s themed earphones, but they do offer a lot of value, and at a reasonable price.
