Samsung sold an impressive number of foldable phones in 2021, building upon the exciting advances made with its Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3. The ability to bend a display into new shapes seemed like fantasy just a few years ago but has become accepted as a proven technology. This is thanks to Samsung pushing the design forward despite the need to overcome several technical challenges.

Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 in August of 2021, improving flexible screen phones in several ways. Most notably, the newest generation is much more reliable than the best folding phones off 2020, featuring a screen that is 80 percent more durable. The 2021 Galaxy Z series is also water-resistant, boasting an IP-X8 rating meaning it can be submerged for half an hour without water penetrating the seal. S Pen compatibility, brighter displays, faster chips, and larger cover screens guaranteed these phones were in high demand, featuring the very best technology in almost every way.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Samsung was pleased enough with the reception of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 that the company shared some statistics about its foldable phone sales in 2021. What stands out most is an incredible four times increase in sales compared to 2020. Samsung’s sales of foldables in 2020 have been estimated at 2.8 million, which, if accurate, would place the 2021 Galaxy Z series at 11.2 million units, a startling increase. Suddenly, the research into foldable, rollable, and sliding phones sounds less futuristic and much more likely.

Samsung Survey & Comparisons

Samsung surveyed customers to find out which aspects of these new devices were most important and influenced buying decisions. Obviously, the innovative form factor and ability to change shape and size played a major role, however, there were many other points that stood out. The appearance is a big factor, and both the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 are unique and stylish phones that look good in the hand. The large cover screen and the ability to use the phone without opening it fully, allowing more privacy, was another point that was raised. Multitasking and productivity with the S Pen were also mentioned.

Samsung itself drew a comparison to the ability of the Galaxy Z series to bring in customers who previously owned phones from another brand. As one of the few manufacturers of flexible screen phones that is to be expected. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 inspired 40 percent more brand switches than the Galaxy S21 and 50-percent more than the Galaxy Note 20. While Samsung wasn’t the first to market with a foldable phone, it has played the biggest role in making it a trusted technology, and its Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 have set a high bar of what to expect in the future.
