Marvel’s X-Men have encountered many powerful, Omega-Level mutants, acting as both heroes and villains. But few mutants can compare to Santa Claus. That’s right, not only is Santa Claus real in the Marvel Universe, but he’s also one of the most powerful mutants in existence.

While Jolly Old St. Nick has made multiple appearances over the years in several Marvel comics, many fans of the X-Men may have missed the story that revealed his mutant identity, finally confirmed in Marvel Holiday Special (1991). The story, entitled “A Miracle A Few Blocks Down From 32nd Street,” takes place shortly after mutant members Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Wolverine, and Banshee first joined the X-Men.

While decorating their Christmas tree, the new X-Men get an alert from the mutant-detecting Cerebro, which informs them that the most powerful mutant ever registered is at Rockefeller Center. Eager to determine if this mutant is friend or foe, the X-Men investigate.

The X-Men Meet Santa Claus

When they arrive, the X-Men don’t encounter the mutant they were looking for, but the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Forced to battle classic baddies like the Blob, Toad, Unus the Untouchable, and Mastermind, the X-Men discover the Brotherhood is also seeking to enlist the world’s most powerful mutant to their cause – a boast that draws the attention of Rockefeller Center’s Santa Claus. While the X-Men manage to hold their own, their fight is suddenly cut short when the Brotherhood disappears… replaced by a set of plastic action figures that Santa Claus quickly pockets.

Suddenly suspecting which mutant they are actually searching for, Banshee chats with Santa, identifying himself only as “Kris Kringle.” Santa indicates he’s not interested in choosing sides during the holidays and then taps the side of his nose, teleporting the X-Men away. Moments later, the mutants find themselves outside Rockefeller Center without the memories of their earlier fight. As a final gift, Santa offers up a winter snowfall, ending the story on an upbeat (if somewhat weird) note.

It’s Not Santa’s Only Appearance in Marvel Comics

Santa Claus continued to appear in other Marvel holiday stories, spreading holiday cheer and displaying a host of other powerful abilities. In Sensational She Hulk #8, Jennifer Walters (aka She Hulk) meets a short private detective named “Nick St. Christopher” who helps her convict a murderer. Nick gleefully helps She Hulk sneak into apartment buildings through chimneys, naturally, in search of evidence. He also seems to know everyone’s secrets (not too difficult for someone who knows “who’s been naughty and who’s been nice”). When he starts to flirt a bit too much with She Hulk, however, his wife appears and drags him back to the North Pole.

Santa showed off his grim and gritty side briefly in Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #112 when he tracks down a gun-toting Santa imposter who tried to rob Peter Parker’s neighbor and corners him on the roof, grousing, “Last year it was slasher films. Now it’s this. I’m not laughing.” Fortunately, Santa proves more benevolent than vengeful as the thief reappears on Christmas Day, completely reformed and passing out presents. He even passes Peter Parker a note “from a friend” advising him to go to his Aunt May’s for Christmas morning.

By now, it should be apparent that Marvel-themed Santa stories tend to be on the weird side. But even those tales were pretty tame compared to one that appeared in Deadpool (Vol. 7) #7, when a group of irate kids actually hire Deadpool to assassinate Santa Claus for not giving them presents. Even worse, Deadpool accepts and travels to the North Pole, ready take out the jolly old mutant. When he arrives, however, he ends up battling a gun-toting Mrs. Claus and a drunk, fighting mad Santa who attributes his incredible speed and stamina to lugging “a few billion presents… up and down chimneys all around the globe in one night.” Santa finally admits he couldn’t deliver Christmas presents this year after his greedy head elf Tinsel organized a walk out and made the elves abandon the workshop. Furious, Deadpool tracks down and murders the rogue elf, saving Christmas.

Santa Claus Has Omega-Level Mutant Abilities

Based on the abilities he showcases in his Marvel appearances, Santa Claus clearly possesses superpowers on par with Omega-Level mutants like Apocalypse and Jean Grey. Physically, Santa appears to be immortal and possesses superhuman strength, speed, stamina, and even agility despite his bulk. He also appears capable of shape shifting as he appears different in each story. One appearance in GLX-Mas Special showed he appears as various ethnicities to different people – indicating his appearance may fluctuate like the world devourer Galactus, causing him to appear as people expect him to.

Aside from his physical attributes, Santa Claus also has incredible mental abilities, based in telepathy and telekinesis. He knows everyone’s secrets (particularly if they’ve been naughty or nice). He can also erase memories and manipulate thoughts – although whether or not he used this ability to reform the thief who robbed Spider-Man’s neighbor is unknown. As Santa did not mind control the elves who walked out on him, this seems unlikely (it’s also possible his mutant abilities do not work on elves). He has also demonstrated the ability to restructure matter at the atomic level when he transmuted the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants into toys – although his generous nature led him to later restore them.

While Santa can teleport himself and others vast distances without any aid (he once effortlessly teleported She Hulk to Australia), with his sleigh and reindeer he becomes nigh-unstoppable. The sleigh (or Santa) possesses time and space manipulation abilities, enabling Santa to deliver billions of gifts around the world in a single night. However, while Santa can make toys incredibly fast with his powers, they do have their limits as he must still employ elves to construct the majority.

This begs the question – are Santa Claus’ Omega-Level mutant abilities more powerful than Apocalypse or the Phoenix? Although Santa could handle some truly high-level threats with no problems, when the elves walked out of his workshop, he collapsed into depression, becoming drunk and emaciated. This could however, all be an elaborate ploy by the jolly old mutant to encourage Deadpool to get into the Christmas spirit.

Santa Claus has shown a trickster’s spirit in his various Marvel comics appearances, after all, and while the mutant claims he has no interest in choosing sides, it’s clear his allegiance lies with good mutants like the X-Men.
