The grimly sprawling Saw franchise has thus far produced nine installments across nearly two decades — here’s a thorough breakdown of each film’s principal cast and the characters they play. Created by Leigh Whannell and Aquaman‘s James Wan, the concept began life as a short film in 2003. Used as a pitching tool, it ultimately brought Lionsgate on-board and a feature film version was greenlit. Shot in just 18 days and released in 2004, it went on to gross over $10o million worldwide. As such, it became one of the most successful horror films since 1996’s Scream.

The original film followed two men who found themselves trapped and forced to play a twisted game. Armed with alter-ego Jigsaw’s tragic origin point, John Kramer took it upon himself to test people’s commitment to life. His modus operandi included forcing people to kill others to save their own lives or mutilate themselves in order to escape some kind of confinement. Those that failed would have a piece of their skin cut away to make them as lacking. This ritualistic habit earned him the name Jigsaw with the police officers hunting him. Following the success of the first film, the franchise became a staple of the Halloween period. Packed with twists and an often-overlapping timeline, a new Saw installment was released each year until 2010, with writing and directing credits changing hands as the franchise wore on.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Despite the diminishing returns in quality and an increasing budget, the franchise remained no less profitable. Regardless, it went on hiatus until a soft-reboot/belated continuation with 2017’s Jigsaw. The idea was that it would a new storyline and fresh characters that could carry the saga into the future. Though it enjoyed a still healthy box office, the franchise went back on the shelf for a few more years. The world, however, will once again be revisited with another loose continuation, Spiral, this time devised by Chris Rock. For the first time since Saw IV, Darren Lynn Bousman will sit in the director’s chair. And, with a larger budget and many more household names, the overall list of those who have starred in the franchise has grown substantially. Here’s a breakdown of every actor (and character) that has featured in the various installments over the years.

The cast will also include John Tokatlidis, Genelle Williams, K.C. Collins, Christopher Tai, Morgan David Jones, Nazneen Contractor, Frank Licari, Leia Charles Leigh, Alison Johnson, and Edie Inksetter. All will become clear, though, as the new installment draws closer and the direction of the overall Saw franchise becomes more apparent.
