The producers of the Saw film franchise have confirmed that new video games based on the series are in development for new-gen consoles. During the franchise’s heyday in the late 2000s, Konami published two Saw video games, both of which took place between the first two films. The games were poorly received, leaving a lot to be desired from the pulpy-yet-iconic film series.

The Saw film franchise briefly ended the year the second game was released. Since then, there have been two other films and Saw has crossed over with games like Dead by Daylight. Konami never made a third Saw game, and the multi-media plans for the series have largely ceased to exist. Saw used to release a new film entry each year, but studio Lionsgate has slowed down on the series. Nonetheless, following the release of Spiral: From the Book of Saw, the studio seems to be more bullish on continuing the Saw franchise, and a tenth film is now in development.

Similarly, during a Reddit AMA with Saw producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules, it was confirmed that more new Saw games are on the way. When asked whether or not any new Saw video games would be coming to current-gen consoles, the producers said it is definitely happening. It seems like these games are in early development and there are still some details that need to be hashed out, but more Saw games are clearly in the works.

100%. Lionsgate has brought us some amazing projects we are exploring now. But it will 100% happen.”

In 2020, Jigsaw appeared in Call of Duty: Warzone, but that is the most substantial role the character has had since the Konami-published titles. As for what shape a new Saw video game would take, that is still a mystery. Games have evolved a lot since 2010, with some licensed titles being on par with some of the best games of the last decade. Developers have also figured out how to create enticing branching stories through Telltale-esque blends of adventure and point-and-click mechanics, which is something that would make for a compelling Saw game.

It also remains to be seen who would develop and publish a new Saw game. Developers like Illfonic have tackled horror icons like Friday the 13th and Predator. Friday the 13th co-developer Gun Media is reportedly planning to make a Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game, though nothing has been confirmed. Although the two aforementioned titles have gotten a mixed response from critics, there does seem to be a craving for games based on these iconic horror franchises, and whoever ends up making a new Saw video game would be wise to consider why fans love horror games in the first place.
