Newly released concept art for WandaVision reveals a unique, alternative design for the Scarlet Witch’s crown. Debuting on Disney+ in 2021 as part of Marvel’s expansion into streaming, WandaVision saw Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) create her own alternate reality in which Vision (Paul Bettany) was never killed in an attempt to cope with the trauma of losing him. The series also welcomed Kathryn Hahn to the MCU as Agatha Harkness, as well as Teyonah Paris, who plays an older Monica Rambeau.

What began as a sweet 60s sitcom soon became the true origin story of Wanda’s transformation into the Scarlet Witch. The strength of Wanda’s abilities had been teased at various times throughout the MCU, but WandaVision saw her discover her full potential and begin to harness the chaos magic that dwells inside her. The finale episode saw Wanda go head to head with fellow witch Agatha Harkness and transform in the Scarlet Witch with her new costume materializing around her, complete with a red crown that is reminiscent of the comic-book iteration of the character. Now, newly shared concept art for WandaVision has offered a glimpse at an early design idea for Scarlet Witch’s crown.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Shared to Instagram by Marvel’s Director of Visual Development Andy Park, the image shows an early design of the crown, which appears to be created entirely out of Wanda’s chaos magic, as opposed to her solid, deep red crown that was ultimately used. Park revealed that this design was actually one of many that were created, sharing that the team previously explored the idea of having a non-solid crown for Wanda that was created entirely using effects, before deciding on the eventual solid-crown outcome. The costume that Wanda wears in the art also differs slightly from what was eventually created for the show. Check out Park’s post below.

The non-solid crown made from Wanda’s chaos magic ended up being seen briefly within WandaVision, however, Wanda’s full transformation saw it turn into the uniquely shaped solid crown that is synonymous with her character. Olsen is set to return as the Scarlet Witch in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that will see Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) attempt a multiversal clean up following the events of last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. So far, promotional footage for the Doctor Strange sequel has teased a potential villainous turn for Wanda following the discovery of her new powers, as well as her desire to reunite with her children.

It’s always interesting to see the various stages that character designs go through and how much they ultimately differ from what is then created for the final look. The idea of Wanda’s crown being made entirely of her magic would certainly have looked impressive on-screen, however a solid, wearable crown is likely the more practical option and still makes for an incredible reveal once Wanda’s transformation is complete in WandaVision‘s final episode. There isn’t long to go now until audiences can see Scarlet Witch back in action – Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releases in theatres on May 6.
