Schitt’s Creek is a true bright spot in the world of television. At the heart of the show, it is a story about transformation. With each new season, the characters and the town of Schitt’s Creek continue to grow and evolve in unexpected and wonderful ways.

During their time in the small town, the Rose family leaves an unmistakable impact on its people and landmarks. By the series finale, everything is brighter, better, and looking up. The success of Schitt’s Creek shows that the world needs more feel-good comedies on TV.

The Town Sign

The town sign undergoes quite the transformation from the beginning of the show to the end. The sign is introduced in the second episode of the series when Johnny is being taken on a tour of the town by the mayor, Roland Schitt. Johnny is completely shocked and sees the sign as obscene but none of the town’s people agree.

Thinking they are appeasing Johnny, they add a sign saying, “Don’t worry, it’s his sister” which only makes the sign all the more ridiculous. In the final episode of the series, the town repaints the sign in a hilarious tribute to the Rose family, bringing the show full circle.

Blouse Barn

David’s first significant job in Schitt’s Creek is at Blouse Barn, an “upscale boutique” in the neighboring town, Elmdale. David becomes the Creative Director of Blouse Barn and transforms the aesthetic of the store from tacky and cheap to stark, modern, and sophisticated. After David’s creative upgrades, the store is selling ponchos, everything is black and white, and there are giant black bird statutes everywhere. It looks like Moira Rose’s closet/movie set.

David’s questionable changes to Blouse Barn are not beneficial to business, however, a firm from Australia offers to buy out the store, and David steps in to ensure that the store gets what it is worth. This represents a huge turning point for David professionally and sets him up to open Rose Apothecary.

Roland Schitt

From the beginning to the end of the show Roland goes from town mayor, to Rosebud employee, to co-founder/owner of the Rosebud Motel Group. Without a doubt, meeting the Roses has expanded Roland’s willingness to go for more in life.  Apart from his business success, Roland’s sense of humor is consistent throughout the show.

He is known for giving people a hard time, especially Johnny Rose. However, in the final season, Roland shows his loyalty by standing up for Johnny against the board room of investors. This is a proud moment for Roland and shows he is on Johnny’s team.

Rose Apothecary

While David’s transformation of the Blouse Barn was a bit out of touch with the local consumers, with the help of Patrick, he was able to curate a store that catered to the local population and was still on brand for himself. Rose Apothecary was originally an ordinary small-town general store that sold everything from toilet paper to fruit.

David transformed it into an updated take on a general store or as David calls it “a very specific store” or “an environment.” Selling locally created items on consignment, David found a clever way to open his business and keep start-up costs down. The store was a hit on opening day and David and Patrick were able to come up with creative ideas to keep business coming in like Open Mic Night, which thankfully gave us the show’s first rendition of “Simply the Best.” The ultimate sign of success, Moira said she would actually shop there!

Stevie Budd

Stevie began the series as an uninspired towny working at a dead-end job at her great aunt’s motel. Throughout the series, she learns to open up as she becomes friends with David and works with Johnny at the motel. Through her relationship with the Roses, she learns to ask for more out of life and explore what she actually wants to do.

She ventures out, interviews for other jobs, and, most unexpectedly stars in the town play, Cabaret. This is a shining moment for Stevie as she learns to step into the spotlight. By the end of the series, she is a singing and dancing, co-owner/founder of the Rosebud Motel Group.

Moira Rose

At the beginning of the series, Moira was completely wrapped up in her own world. She knew little about her children and was completely resistant to settling into Schitt’s Creek. However, as the series progressed, Moira came to love the wonderful people of the town and become more involved in the community and her children’s lives.

She joined the town council, Jazza Gals, and brought her love of theatre to town by directing Cabaret and hosting her movie’s premiere in the town. Throughout the series, she also began to take interest in her children and husband and provides them emotional support and encouragement becoming a more supportive and caring mother and wife.

Johnny Rose

Johnny begins the series losing his entire fortune and business. He is a sweet man but Johnny is out of touch with what is going on with his family, the real world, and his business. He spends his first two seasons in Schitt’s Creek trying to sell the town and come up with ideas to leave. By season three he finally settles in, looks around, and begins to see how he can improve the life he has.

He sees how he can help Stevie with the hotel and how he can better support his family. Although Johnny has a slower start than the others, he ends the series smarter, braver, and a more loving father. He is also the head of a hopeful new business and is off to a new life in LA.

Alexis Rose

Alexis began the show as a self-absorbed serial dater who used her relationships to distract herself from reality. However, by season 2, Alexis began to make friends in Schitt’s Creek and got her first real job. This inspired a sense of independence that then lead her to finish high school and enroll in college.

By season 5 she started her own PR business and was in a committed long-term relationship with Ted. Although she did not end up with him, she loved him and left the relationship on good terms. For the first time in her life, Alexis was excited to step into the future on her own.

David Rose

David Rose is the driving character in Schitt’s Creek with much of the plot centering around his actions and accomplishments. By settling more into his identity, he focused on his strengths and ran with them. He learned how to become capable, to take chances, and to let people in. He was also a huge motivating factor for the rest of his family throughout the series by becoming the first family member to get a job and build friendships in the town.

Starting out as a bag boy, he then upgraded to Creative Director of Blouse Barn, and then a business owner at Rose Apothecary. He also found a lifelong friend in Stevie and a husband in Patrick. After seeing David step out into the world, the rest of his family followed and began their own growth journeys.

Rosebud Motel

It may come as a surprise to see the Rosebud Motel at the top of this list. However, it is the perfect symbol of the value of internal transformation. The motel got a new sign and a few small improvements throughout the series, but overall, in the end, it was still a cheap hotel with the same teal walls and old furniture. Despite the limited physical makeover, the value of the motel was completely transformed in the hearts of everyone who lived and worked there throughout the series.

At the beginning of the show, the Rosebud represented everything the Rose family had lost. But, by the end of the series, the motel became a symbol of everything they had gained: family, friends, pride, capability, and true happiness. It is fitting that it was the Rosebud Motel that restored the Rose’s fortune.
