Schitt’s Creek: 10 Times The Cast Broke Character

Due to the hilarity of Schitt’s Creek, it’s amazing that the actors were able to produce workable scenes without them laughing at each other and breaking character. Fans of Schitt’s Creek have a hard time getting through episodes without spitting out their water from laughing, it’s impressive that the actors were able to stay focused enough to get through a workable scene!

However, thanks to YouTube, it appears that the scenes were harder to get through than fans realized. From Moira’s accent to David’s facial expressions to forgetting lines, there were plenty of amazing moments in the show’s six seasons where the actors broke character and laughed at their fellow castmates in the middle of filming.

10 Catherine O’Hara Made Herself Laugh When Hopping In Bed With Alexis

Moira isn’t the most maternal or hands-on mother to David and Alexis, but that slowly changed when they were in Schitt’s Creek. Without working, Moira had the chance to get to know her kids and grow an attachment to them. When Alexis fell ill, Moira hated the fact that her “bébé” girl would be home alone. She ended up cutting her night short and hopping into bed with Alexis to comfort her. It was a tender moment on-screen, but in real life, Catherine O’Hara (Moira) made herself laugh when clearing her throat before taking a sip of soup

9 An Accidental Cuss From Eugene Levy

In “Milk Money,” Johnny got himself into some trouble after Alexis bought almost $400 of raw milk. In order to get rid of the milk and make some money back, they needed Roland’s help because of his truck (and his apparent knowledge of the underground milk world).

Johnny and Alexis were bickering throughout the ride because of the situation they were in, and in real life, Eugene Levy needed a second to gather his thoughts after accidentally cursing in the middle of the scene.

8 When Johnny Tried Borrowing Roland’s Truck

In the first season, Johnny needed Roland’s truck in order to file unemployment. He wasn’t proud of his situation and didn’t feel comfortable telling Roland why he needed his truck. Roland agreed that Johnny could take the truck but he needed to park it a certain way, add gas to the tank, fix the seats and the radio before he returned it. Johnny felt like it was more trouble than it had to be, so he left Roland and his truck for a different option. While filming, both Eugene Levy (Johnny Rose) and Chris Elliot (Roland Schitt) broke character when Elliot realized he still had his glasses on during the scene.

7 Moira In The Vineyard

If fans were wondering if Catherine O’Hara had a hard time getting Moira through her commercial for Herb Ertlinger’s winery, they’d be right. Moira hated everything about the wine and had a hard time pronouncing Herb’s name.

Likewise, Catherine had just as hard of a time getting through the scene as Moira did for the commercial. In an outtake, Catherine was out of place and missed her marking when it came to her grabbing a glass of wine. Catherine broke character as she backed up to grab the wine and began giggling with the crew.

6 Dan Levy Burped During His Workout

In season 3, David and Stevie began seeing the same guy at the same time, making their friendship a little tricky. David didn’t know how to feel about it and went outside to do squats before Stevie approaches him about the situation. However, while Dan Levy (David Rose) was squatting, he accidentally burped on camera and immediately broke character to apologize to the crew who were filming. 

5 Johnny & Roland’s Golf Lesson Was Hard To Get Through

When Johnny and Stevie were preparing to pitch a proposition to a local golf course on behalf of Rosebud Motel, Stevie admitted that she wasn’t great at golf and wasn’t too excited about the expedition. Her mood changed after Johnny told her she could drink on the cart and that he and Roland would give her a lesson. Outside, Johnny and Roland were essentially cuddling each other while teaching Stevie how to putt on the green. The position humored Stevie and she took a video of it for proof. And as expected, Chris Elliott and Eugene Levy had a hard time getting through that scene because of all the laughing. 

4 Fold In The Cheese!

One of the best mother-son moments in the series was when David and Moira went to Roland and Jocelyn’s house to cook enchiladas for the family. It became evident that it’s been years since either one of them cooked because they had no idea what most of the instructions meant. The moment Moira and David began fighting about “folding in the cheese” was the moment they won over viewers. And they weren’t alone. While filming, Dan broke character as Catherine O’Hara (as Moira) yelled at him about folding in the cheese.

3 Catherine O’Hara Lost Her Focus Looking At David’s Bronzed Skin

In “Allez-Vous,” Moira and David decided to shoot their shot at selling Allez-Vous skincare for the chance to win a car and financial rewards. Before pitching the products, David tried one of the bronzing moisturizers on his face. The cream turned David’s face orange but he had no choice but to act like nothing was wrong as a way to sell the products. While Moira kept her composure when looking at David’s orange skin, Catherine O’Hara did not. Every time she looked at David she burst into the giggles and had to re-start the scene.

2 A Little Bit Of Alexis Took Some Time To Nail

One of the most memorable Alexis moments was when she performed the theme song to her former reality show, A Little Bit Alexis. Her dance moves and facial expressions as she sang those lyrics live rent-free in fans’ minds. However, it wasn’t the dance moves that Annie Murphy (Alexis Rose) had a hard time with, it was her introduction to the song to Jocelyn and Moira. She kept getting tongue-tied trying to say her lines and had to re-do take after take until she nailed it.

1 Roland’s Beer Exploded In Johnny’s Face

Roland and Johnny became friends and business owners but they don’t always get along. The two men couldn’t be more different from each other but there’s a mutual respect between the two when it comes down to it. In one scene, Roland grabs a beer from the minifridge and as soon as he’s about to take a sip, the beer explodes all over Eugene Levy. The two men could have run with the scene but it was impossible not to laugh once Elliott got laughing.
