Roland Schitt is the mayor of the titular town in Schitt’s Creek. While he first appears to be a slobbish and annoying inconvenience for the Rose family, he gradually shows that he is not such a bad guy and ends up being their valued friend.

Despite how he can come off at times, Roland is smarter than he looks. When people are in need, he is also known to occasionally have some very wise things to say, much to the surprise of others. Then, at other times, he only thinks he is smart and his advice ends up being the exact opposite of helpful.

10 Best: Romantic Getaway

While getting used to living in such close quarters at the motel, Johnny and Moira Rose find that they have difficulty sharing some romantic time alone together without being interrupted by their kids. Roland sympathizes and offers his nearby cabin as a getaway for Johnny and Moira.

Johnny initially thinks Roland is an idiot for not leaving the key where he said it was, but it turns out Roland’s advice was right and Johnny just got the directions wrong. So Johnny and Moira end up having a romantic night in Bob’s cabin despite Roland’s best intentions to help.

9 Worst: Selling The Town

As soon as Johnny arrives in town, he begins looking for a way to escape and regain his former wealth. He decides he is going to sell the town but needs Roland to sign off on the deal. Roland is initially hesitant but changes his mind when he meets the obnoxious potential buyer who he, of course, likes right away.

Unfortunately, Roland is so taken with the man that he delays the deal. He insists they hold off on signing anything until they have dinner at Roland’s house. As luck would have it, as soon as dinner is done, the buyer has a heart attack.

8 Best: Dealing With The Squatter

In an effort to expand on the motel business, Johnny and Roland buy a second roadside motel with the idea to fix it up. However, when they arrive to inspect the new property, they find that someone has clearly been living in one of the rooms.

Out of the two of these men, Johnny is usually the more sensible one. However, in this case, Roland is the one who advises that they scope out the motel, wait for the squatter to return, then call the police instead of dealing with the gun-wielding man themselves.

7 Worst: Being Bob’s Wingman

When Bob’s wife, Gwen, leaves him, Bob’s friends rally around him to help get him back on his feet. They figure the best thing to pull Bob out of his funk is to help him meet a new lady.

Roland is immediately confident that he would make an excellent wingman, but his confidence is misplaced. When attempting to role-play a pickup scenario, Roland pretends to be a woman at the bar but chooses the name Gwen, which sends Bob spiraling back into misery.

6 Best: Having The Talk With Patrick

Roland has a tendency to talk before thinking which can sometimes cause him to say some insensitive things, but he can also be very perceptive of people’s feelings, even when others are not.

As the wedding of David and Patrick approaches, Roland asks Johnny if he’s welcomed Patrick into the family. When Johnny realizes that he hasn’t reached out to Patrick, he encourages Johnny to do so and make his soon-to-be son-in-law feel acknowledged.

5 Worst: Illegal Milk

For one of his less-honest business ventures, Johnny attempts to acquire and then sell raw milk, which is illegal. He foolishly enlists the help of Roland to transport the milk out of town without the authorities finding out.

Roland plays it cool, offering advice as if he were a career criminal who deals with these situations all the time. But at the first sign of a cop, Roland goes into full-blown panic mode which inevitably leads to the whole scheme getting discovered.

4 Best: Helping Out With The Motel

Roland is often the last person the Rose family wants to see around the motel, but he has also been there to help them out on many occasions. When Roland and Jocelyn have a new baby, he comes looking for work as a handyman.

While Johnny is worried about Roland’s work ethic — for good reason — Roland sells himself well. He reminds Johnny that there are dirty jobs to be done that only Roland would agree to do and he becomes a valued part of the Rosebud Motel team.

3 Worst: Dealing With The Dead Body

When one of the guests at the motel passes away, Johnny and Stevie attempt to remove the body without alerting the other customers. Of course, Roland is just about the worst person for dealing with such a delicate situation.

Aside from discussing the matter openly among the guests, Roland’s idea for keeping the guests from finding out about this is to simply lock them all in their rooms. He then assures Johnny that he saw plenty of dead bodies when he was a kid… which offers no comfort to Johnny at all.

2 Best: Sticking Up For Johnny

Looking for a way to expand the motel business into something bigger, Johnny, Stevie and Roland head to New York City to pitch their franchising idea to a group of investors.

While the pitch initially seems to go alright, Roland accidentally overhears the investors mocking Johnny and his idea behind his back. Roland then stands up for Johnny, telling them that he has more courage than all of them and that they were foolish to doubt him.

1 Worst: The Town Sign

The name Schitt’s Creek is not an appealing name for a town, but it turns out that is only one of many bizarre things it has going for it. As Johnny plans to sell the town, he is introduced to the welcoming sign that appears to depict two people in the midst of a sexual act.

When Johnny confronts Roland about how the sign looks, he doesn’t see anything wrong with it. After being convinced it sends the wrong message, Roland suggests a clarifying change be made which makes it much, much worse.
