Catherine O’Hara is not in the Schitt’s Creek cast group chat, according to series star Emily Hampshire. Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek, created by father and son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, first aired on CBC Television back in January 2015, with the show concluding in April 2020. Schitt’s Creek was well received for its fish out of water concept, off the wall humor, and memorable performances, and has gained something of a cult following. Consisting of 80 episodes spread across six seasons, the show received a record 19 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, winning all seven major comedy awards for its final season.

The show follows the once-wealthy Rose family as they become penniless and wind up moving to Schitt’s Creek, a small, backwater town they once purchased as a joke. Widely praised for its no-nonsense portrayal of LGBTQ+ people, Schitt’s Creek, at its heart, was always a show about family. With this in mind, it stands to reason the cast would feel a strong bond after six years of working together.

According to Hampshire, who played hotelier Stevie Budd in the sitcom, the cast has a group chat they use to keep in touch and check in with one another. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Hampshire shared that all of the main cast are active in the group chat, with the exception of O’Hara, who played family matriarch Moira Rose. In a tongue-in-cheek response, Hampshire shared O’Hara’s choice of cell phone was the reason. Read Hampshire’s comments on the topic below:

So yeah, we do have the group chat. We sometimes take Dan [Levy] off it and talk about him. And Catherine [O’Hara] is not in the group chat because she still uses a 4S iPhone, and even the 4S iPhone doesn’t want to admit it’s an iPhone, so it acts like an Android, and so if you put her in a group chat it turns everybody green, and things don’t get sent, and it ruins everything.

Hampshire rose to prominence during her time on the show, whilst O’Hara is best known for her role as Kate McCallister in the Home Alone movies, as well as her frequent collaborations with Christopher Guest. Schitt’s Creek only finished last year, and, with successful long-running shows, it is natural for the cast to develop a rapport and look to keep in touch after the fact. It makes sense all of the core cast would be involved, including O’Hara, though scheduling commitments might play a part in preventing regular contact between the former cast members.

Based on her comments, it’s pretty clear Hampshire is joking around when she discusses how O’Hara’s iPhone messes with the group chat. It’s likely she’s still in close contact with her former castmates using other means. It’s clear the Schitt’s Creek team still has a strong bond even though it’s been a while since they filmed together. While it’s unclear if viewers will see more Schitt’s Creek in the future, some are hoping for a spinoff movie or similar project that could reunite the beloved cast.
