Scream star David Arquette reveals that Dewey’s limp seen in the first two sequels of the horror franchise will return in the new film. Arquette is one of the original cast members returning for the latest installment in the slasher series as Dewey Riley, who started out as a deputy sheriff for Woodsboro and brother to heroine Sidney Prescott’s best friend Tatum. The new film will also see the returns of Neve Campbell as Sidney, Courteney Cox as Dewey’s wife Gale Weathers, Marley Shelton as Judy Hicks from Scream 4 and Roger L. Jackson as the voice of the Ghostface killer.

Though not a retcon sequel for the franchise, the new Scream is described as returning to Woodsboro 25 years after the events of the 1996 film as a new string of murders rock the fictional California town and resurrects the secrets from the town’s dark past. The horror sequel will feature a large roster of franchise newcomers including Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Dylan Minnette, Mikey Madison, Sonia Ben Ammar, and Kyle Gallner. As audiences begin debating the secrets teased in the first trailer for Scream, one star has offered a new detail for the upcoming film.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In honor of the first trailer’s release, Arquette recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the latest installment in the Scream franchise. Though keeping mum on most details regarding his character, the 50-year-old actor confirmed Dewey’s limp would return in the film after having been left out of 2011’s Scream 4. See what Arquette said below:

“Dewey’s had a rough life of it, and in the fourth Scream, they wanted me to get rid of his limp. But he’s got the limp back; I can give you that much!”

Arquette’s note that Dewey has had a “rough life” is certainly an understatement given he has been injured to some degree in every previous Scream installment, the most notable being the stab wounds received in the first two films. Interestingly, the character was supposed to die in the original film, only for positive test reactions to push Wes Craven to switch out his death for a scene of him surviving. Though the explanation behind his limp proved a running joke in the subsequent sequels, Arquette’s confirmation that the limp will return in the new Scream is sure to come as an interesting detail for fans of the franchise.

The first trailer for Scream may have primarily seen Dewey seated in most shots, eagle-eyed viewers will be able to spot that the few glimpses of his facing off against Ghostface see him with a slight hitch in his step, confirming the limp’s return. Though directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have promised the trailer is also full of misdirection, theories are ablaze that the battle between Ghostface and Dewey will result in his proper death in the film, further evidenced by a glimpse of a horrified Gale arriving at a crime scene. Only time will tell what the story holds for Arquette and Dewey when Scream hits theaters on January 14.
