The latest poster for 2022’s Scream gives fans a massive Ghostface identity clue while trolling them at the same time. The late, great Wes Craven’s iconic slasher franchise will return with a vengeance in early 2022, and all eyes are turning to the latest Ghostface killer as the movie steadily gets closer. This time directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Scream will return to Woodsboro just as another knife-wielding serial killer starts claiming a new generation of victims. As the Scream trailer confirmed, these unlucky souls are all related to past Ghostfaces, meaning this is going to be a deep dive into franchise history.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Without Craven behind the camera, there was some apprehension over whether Scream has what it takes to continue the beloved series. However, the returns of Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox have gone a long way in convincing fans they should be excited about what’s ahead. In regards to just who is behind the Ghostface mask, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have gone to great lengths to keep their identity a secret. This includes filming multiple endings, putting misdirects in the trailer, and even keeping the Scream cast in the dark.

The latest poster for Scream offers up a big clue about who the new Ghostface is, but it also doesn’t narrow things down much. Shared online in honor of the 12 Screams for the Holidays, the new Scream poster features an ominous look at Stu Macher’s house from the first film and offers a tantalizing tease: The Ghostface killer is on the poster. The downside? Just about every character known to be in Scream is on it. Check it out below, then start forming your theories.

Much of the new Scream cast is comprised of original characters, all of whom could be the guilty party. There are even compelling theories that one of the legacy characters is the new Ghostface; while some are torn on the idea, Sidney Prescott (Campbell) has become a viable candidate to be the killer. Fans know very little about Scream‘s newcomers at this point, so everyone is a suspect. That is, except for Jenna Ortega’s Tara Carpenter, who was revealed to be Ghostface’s first victim in the Scream trailer. Assuming that wasn’t a misdirect, of course.

No matter how many clues or teases Scream provides, fans won’t know just who is under the Ghostface mask until the movie arrives next month. The creative team is too invested in keeping their identity from getting out early, and to be fair, that would almost certainly ruin the movie. Audiences want to see the mystery unravel for themselves. While it’s a lot of fun to theorize, it’s better to see everything fall into place without spoilers. Scream is just over a month away, so luckily the wait isn’t too long now.
