Scream 2022 legacy star Neve Campbell says she would “absolutely” return for Scream 6Scream 2022, which is the fifth film in the franchise, hit theaters on January 14, 2022 and scored a stellar opening of over $30 million. The film follows a new version of Ghostface attempting to create a “re-quel,” which combines new characters played by Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Dylan Minnette, Jack Quaid, Jasmine Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Sonia Ben Ammar, Kyle Gallner, and Mikey Madison with legacy characters including Campbell’s Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers, David Arquette’s former Sheriff Dewey Riley, and Marley Shelton’s Scream 4 character Judy Hicks.

Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott has been at the center of the Ghostface murders from the very beginning. The original 1996 Scream film follows her and her friends being hunted down by Ghostface on the anniversary of the murder of her mother. She returned for all four sequels as various iterations of the killer start new murder sprees, either as revenge against Sidney or for their own fame and fortune. As of Scream 4, Sidney became a successful self-help author with a book about survival and not allowing oneself to become a victim. Throughout the years, Sidney has become one of cinema’s most iconic and enduring final girls.

While speaking with THR, Neve Campbell was asked if she would consider returning for Scream 6 if the new film’s success meant that it spawned a sequel. She didn’t need much time to think before saying: “Yeah, absolutely.” She did have the caveat that she “wouldn’t want to do it unless the script is good,” but she seems very confident that if there is a Scream 6, Sidney Prescott will be there. Read her full quote below:

“Yeah, absolutely. It’s down to the strength of the story. I wouldn’t want to do it unless the script is good. It would be hard. But these guys did really well on this one, so I’m curious to see what would come next. So we’ll see.”

Box office receipts for this weekend have yet to come in, as Scream battles Spider-Man: No Way Home to maintain its #1 slot. However, if the slasher maintains its lead, it seems impossible that the studio wouldn’t greenlight the sequel as quickly as possible. In the pandemic era of cinema, any movie that gets people out to the theaters is a rarity, especially one with the ability to compete on the same box office playing field as pre-pandemic entries in the same franchise.

It is difficult for Scream fans to imagine a film in the franchise without Neve Campbell. One day, if the films continue getting sequels for long enough, she will have to pass the torch, but her presence – along with that of the other surviving characters – remains an important element in the alchemy of what makes a Scream movie. Perhaps they may begin to reduce her role to more of a “consultant” for the new characters, in the way that David Arquette’s Dewey acted in Scream 2022, but to not see Sidney would be a real blow to any future Scream movie.
