Ever since Scream was released in 1996, the movie’s pop culture influence has only grown stronger. With four movies so far and a fifth on the horizon, horror fans are in heaven as it seems like there are always more stories to be told within this franchise.

Fans have ideas about Scream 5, but unfortunately there’s a long wait for it to hit theaters. In the meantime, they can think about the main characters in the first movie in the horror franchise. While there are many who are easy to like, others are easy to loathe since, of course, this is a scary movie.

10 Cotton Weary

Scream had some great actors and one of them is Liev Schreiber, who brought his acting talents the role of Cotton Weary.

Of course, even though he’s such a good actor, no one could like Cotton. Everyone believes that he raped and killed Sidney’s mother, Maureen, so that’s obviously horrible. Even when it turns out that he’s not Ghostface, he’s still a terrible guy because he wants to become rich and famous because of Sidney’s family tragedy.

9 Billy Loomis

Many people have portrayed Ghostface and in the first movie of the popular franchise, Skeet Ulrich plays Billy Loomis, Sidney’s boyfriend who is also the killer.

It’s impossible to like Billy because even before his big reveal, he pressure Sidney to have sex with him and doesn’t understand that he’s in the wrong. He’s incredibly creepy and selfish.

8 Stu Macher

Stu Macher is definitely easy to hate. For one thing, he’s the killer along with his pal Billy, so no one would like someone who is going after sweet Sidney and the whole town, too.

For another thing, before the audience learned that Stu was bad news, he is just plain annoying. He’s immature and doesn’t add a lot to the friend group.

7 Neil Prescott

Sidney’s dad Neil Prescott isn’t super memorable and he’s definitely not one of the greatest characters in the franchise.

But there’s really no reason not to like Neil. He gets captured by the killers, so one has to feel sorry for him, and he’s definitely not a horrible father. He seems to really care about Sidney and he’s gone through such a big family tragedy that no one would hate him, even if he’s not around for much of the story.

6 Gale Weathers

Gale Weathers manages to be simultaneously phenomenal and irritating. On the one hand, she’s constantly getting in Sidney’s way, trying to milk her life story so she can get ratings and even a book deal.

On the other hand, Gale and Dewey end up together, which means that she’s not all bad. Gale is pretty easy to like because one has to respect the motivation and drive that she has to succeed in her career as a journalist. She could act like she cares a bit more about the victims, though.

5 Casey Becker

Drew Barrymore’s turn as Casey Becker is one of her most popular roles and it’s hard to think of this movie opening with anyone else.

Casey is a very likeable person and it’s heartbreaking to watch her die in such a horrible way. She’s just going about her business, making popcorn and staying home for a solo movie night. She has no idea that when she answers the phone, a serial killer is going to quiz her on horror films and then murder her when she gets an answer wrong. Watching her parents grieve her death makes Casey an even more sympathetic character.

4 Tatum Riley

Played by Rose McGowan, Tatum Riley is best friends with Sidney and while she can be a bit of an annoying teenager, the kind who is prone to eye rolls and sarcasm, that’s also part of her charm.

Tatum doesn’t seem as scared of the killer as some of the other characters, and that makes her an interesting person, as she seems strong, independent, and sure that she’s going to be okay. Of course, as fans know, that doesn’t work out for her and she dies in a really gory, crazy way.

3 Randy Meeks

While Scream is a funny movie, it’s also scary, and Randy Meeks is both a comedic figure and someone who knows the rules of the horror genre.

If anyone watching the first movie in the franchise isn’t aware of what it takes to survive a scary movie, by the time that the end credits roll, they totally know how to make it thanks to Randy. He seems like a genuinely nice person and he’s also really smart. He truly wants to help everyone survive Ghostface.

2 Dewey Riley

David Arquette’s Scream character, Dewey Riley, is trying his best to be seen as a tough authority figure, but it’s hard for him to be confident and secure enough.

While in real life, this wouldn’t make him very good at his job, it’s pretty endearing and adorable to watch Dewey in the Scream movies. He cares a lot about Sidney and even though he’s scared of Ghostface and the whole situation, he’s determined to help Sidney and save her. His compassion and sense of duty helps get him through his fear.

1 Sidney Prescott

Sidney Prescott is a “final girl” whom fans love, and she’s definitely the most likeable character in this movie — and the entire horror franchise.

Although Sidney is, of course, terrified of what’s going on in her hometown, she doesn’t see herself as weak and she knows that she has the inner strength to get through this horrible time. Sidney is inspiring and feels easy to relate to, even though chances are, Scream fans have never had Ghostface stalking them.
