There are many wonderful episodes of Scrubs. Yet, some of the best are those that deviate from JD’s perspective and make someone else the lead character. This other person (or people) provides the signature inner monologue throughout the episode, and the main plot revolves around them. Each episode is titled either His Story, Her Story, or Their Story.

The greatness of them stems from how they give fans a deeper understanding of some of their favorite characters. On some occasions, they even show that there’s more to a person than many originally thought. There are eight of these episodes, and IMDb’s ratings can give us a definitive ranking of each one’s quality.

8 Their Story II – 7.7

The last of these types of episodes is regarded as the weakest by IMDb reviewers. It follows three of the season eight interns, Derek, Denise, and Sunny.

New surgeon Derek gets caught in the middle of a rift between Turk and JD over the latter’s recent success. Denise bumps heads with Elliot about how to treat a patient. And Sunny struggles with the fact that The Janitor sees her as too weak to torment. It’s a decent episode, but it isn’t quite as engaging as Scrubs at its best. Plus, it doesn’t help that it focuses on lesser-known, therefore less popular characters.

7 Her Story – 8.1

The first “Her Story” doesn’t show a different side to the narrator like the best His/Her stories’ do. Yet, at least it helps further the development of Elliot during her transition from a nervous intern/resident to a confident doctor. And it’s an enjoyable episode to boot.

In it, she grows tired of Dr. Cox’s constant put-downs and decides to make Molly Clock her mentor instead as she’s much more supportive. As always with Dr. Reid, it doesn’t work out as well as she expects.

6 His Story II – 8.1

“His Story II” is centered around everyone’s favorite confident surgeon, Turk. The nerves of his upcoming wedding start to get to him as it’s time to send the invitations. He also has some work problems as an incident in surgery brings his professional integrity into question.

It’s a solid episode that gives fans an insight into Turk’s thoughts about getting married. And by the end, it further proves that he’s met his perfect match in Carla.

5 His Story IV – 8.3

For most of the show, Dr. Kelso is an antagonist, so an episode putting him front and center immediately intrigues. At the beginning of the episode, The Chief of Medicine’s recent laziness makes his employees lose respect for him. So he’s forced to get his hands dirty and become a strong leader again.

The subplot of the other characters arguing about the Iraq war isn’t too great – besides JD’s hilarious lack of knowledge on the matter. But it works well with Kelso’s narrative, making it a strong episode overall.

4 Her Story II – 8.5

In this episode, Carla is the narrator, and she feels threatened over a young nurse that’s just joined the Sacred Heart staff. Espinosa then begins to worry about her age, so she tries to feel young again. Her phobia of getting old goes hand in hand with her fear that she can’t get pregnant.

It’s interesting to see the major insecurities plaguing this outwardly proud and confident character. And the episode also delivers a nice message about how aging isn’t a major problem.

3 Their Story – 8.6

This multiple narrator episode puts the spotlight on some of the show’s most prominent side characters in Ted, Todd, and Jordan.

The nervous Ted gets involved in a pay dispute between Dr. Kelso and the nursing staff. Todd attempts to protect Turk from ruining his career by challenging a senior physician. Jordan, on the other hand, hurts then tries to help Elliot and Keith’s relationship. It’s a great episode that shows the importance of the supporting members of the Sacred Heart family.

2 His Story III – 8.7

The Janitor has always been one of the funniest characters in the series. Although, this episode showcases another side to the outrageous man.

After locking JD in a water tower, he spends the day talking to a patient who is unable to speak. In the conversation, The Janitor truly opens up his job and the difference he feels he makes. The episode is Scrubs at it’s best, as it manages to be insanely wacky one minute and deeply poignant the next.

1 His Story – 8.7

The inaugural “His Story” episode gives a fascinating insight into the mind of one of the series’ most compelling characters, Dr. Cox. It shows that behind his usual bravado, Cox has plenty of personal problems. The primary one being that his stand-offish personality is alienating everyone in his life.

Throughout the episode, he tries to make less destructive decisions due to the advice of both his therapist and JD. Although, naturally, his pride keeps getting in the way. It’s another engaging episode that shows that someone’s outward persona doesn’t always tell the whole story.
