Sea of Thieves is a shared-world action-adventure game where players take on the role of pirates. As they sail throughout the world, they will encounter deadly enemies (including other players) and find all manner of treasure, including various chests.

These chests have different properties. Some can be opened, while others are sold to NPCs for gold. One of the more unique and frequently infuriating chests is the Chest of Sorrow. It has a face featured in its design and is worth a good amount of gold if sold. It can, however, prove dangerous if left unattended.

Finding the Chest of Sorrows in Sea of Thieves

Players can find the chest in several ways. They can dig them up from maps, find them on islands, from shipwrecks, skeleton ships, defeating a Kraken or a Megalodon, etc. It is relatively uncommon for it to show up, but with so many ways to find chests, players are bound to come across one sooner or later.

Players can area a good bit of gold from selling a Chest of Sorrow to either a Gold Hoarder or The Servant of the Flame at The Reaper’s Hideout. It varies between 3,000 to 3,500 gold normally, but at emissary rank V for either Gold Hoarders or Reaper’s Bones, it can sell between 7,500 to 8,750.

However, this is a chest that players will want to keep their eyes on because it will begin crying periodically. If it is on a ship, it will cause the ship to fill with water and possibly sink it. Its crying duration and time between crying sessions are random, so it’s best to keep it close by.

There are ways to negate the ship filling with water. When the chest starts crying, pick it up, and get on the ladder on the side of the ship. It is a little trickier for sloops, as the player will have to get as close to the water as possible while being careful not to fall off. This tactic works best in groups of two or more. Single players may have to bail water, but they can still steer when they need to.

If the player is not immediately planning to go to an outpost to sell the chest, they can drop it on an island while they go about their pirate business, and the Chest of Sorrow is free to let it all out without endangering the player’s ship.

Sea of Thieves is available now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
