Sea of Thieves: Where to Get The Captain’s Key (& What It’s For)

The Captain’s Key is the hardest piece of loot to find in the Sea of Thieves new quest, The Lost Voyage. This quest is part of the Merchant Alliance. As the title fairly clearly states, this quest involves finding a lost ship through a set of clues.

On this quest, pirates must voyage out across the ocean in search of a missing crew and ship. Players will need to sail out on their own with a crew and keep a sharp eye out for clues shining in the distance and even in the sea.

Where to Find the Captian’s Key in the Sea of Thieves

The Captain’s Key is one of the hardest items to find because it consistently is between 1 – 15 paces from one of the many clue sites. It is random, so players will need to check every clue and its nearby vicinity to be sure of its location. It does spawn with every Lost Voyage quest, so there is no way for someone to completely miss out on this item. It is well worth taking the time to search for as well, due to its ability to unlock just about every chest within the quest. Which means pirates can maximize the loot they can collect.

The main three clue sites players will need to check are the clue in a bottle, the barrels floating in the ocean, and the beached clue. Trouble is, if the player or another pirate crew sails through the barrels floating in the ocean, they could break them open, causing the key and rest of the items to quickly scatter and sink. In this situation, the player should jump ship and swim to the area as quickly as possible.

Due to this, players should try to keep their distance from the ocean clue site when sailing. Keeping this distance from all of the clue sites can also help the player locate the Captain’s key. Just like any other type of treasure that the player might see, the Captain’s key glints from a distance.

It even glints blue like the bottled clue, but unlike the yellow glint of any other treasure, making it fairly easy to identify and locate. Making the best and quickest way for players to find the Captain’s key is to simply eye every clue site from a distance. However, be cautious not to mix up the bottled clue and the Captain’s key.
