The Marvel Cinematic Universe can answer Captain Marvel‘s biggest Skrull cliffhanger with Secret Invasion in MCU Phase 4. The upcoming Disney+ series puts Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) in leading roles for a new interpretation of Marvel’s classic comic crossover event. Secret Invasion is expected to be a scaled-down adaptation of the paranoid, body-snatchers story where shapeshifting Skrulls infiltrate Earth and pose as various heroes across the Marvel universe. While details on the show are slim, it is a chance to reveal what happened to the shapeshifting aliens after Captain Marvel.

The 2019 MCU movie starring Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers finally brought Skrulls to the shared universe. The movie subverted expectations of comic book readers by turning the Skrulls into heroes and victims of the Kree’s warring ways. However, Captain Marvel‘s ending left their future up in the air. Carol agreed to help them find a new home after the Kree destroyed Skrullos, their original planet. The MCU skipped past this portion of their journey, though, as Spider-Man: Far From Home showed the Skrulls on a space station with Nick Fury. This decision brought on an expectation that viewers may never learn what happened to the Skrulls and their search for a new home.

With Marvel Studios making Secret Invasion, the Skrull-centric Disney+ series is the perfect place to answer this Captain Marvel cliffhanger. The show has the potential to explore much of the Skrulls’ history in the MCU. This can include going back to 1995 and showing what happened with them and Carol after Captain Marvel. They were last seen flying off into space together to find a new home, so seeing them establish a new Skrull colony or fail to do so would make sense. Furthermore, either option could have major ramifications on Secret Invasion‘s story and explain Captain Marvel‘s Skrull cliffhanger at the same time.

Since the MCU has bypassed a Skrull explanation to this point, Secret Invasion can answer the cliffhanger in whichever way better fits the show’s story. One such outcome could see Carol Danvers help the Skrulls find a new home planet, only for her to leave them and allow the alien race to rebuild on their own. Secret Invasion can then explain how the Skrulls went from settling on a new planet to infiltrating Earth.

There’s also the possibility that Carol and Talos couldn’t find other Skrull groups and a new homeworld after Captain Marvel‘s ending. That could mean they were temporarily rehomed on Earth in secret with the understanding that Carol would continue looking for other planets during her cosmic adventures, only for her to never fulfill that promise. As a result, the Skrulls population on Earth could continue to grow ahead of Secret Invasion. Perhaps some Skrulls immediately turned their attention to taking over Earth, instead, rather than waiting for a new homeworld that may never be found.

If Marvel Studios doesn’t answer Captain Marvel‘s Skrull cliffhanger in Secret Invasion, it is unclear when that could come. It seems unlikely that the Skrulls will be at the center of another MCU project, but The Marvels could fill in this part of Captain Marvel’s past. The sequel would potentially speed past this plot point, though, and Secret Invasion can make it a major part of the story. Considering it has already been a few years since this cliffhanger occurred, it’s long overdue for Marvel to clarify what happened.
