With the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie, SEGA is interested in creating a Sonic theme park. The Japanese video game series started in 1991 for the Sega Genesis. This spawned several games, animated shows, web series, comics, and live-action films. While the series is rooted in platformer games, the games have branched out into other genres, including racing, fighting, action, RPG, and sports.

The success of Sonic the Hedgehog is thanks to the character himself that the series is titled after. Sonic is one of the most iconic characters in all of video game history. While many folks are familiar with his buddies Tails and Knuckles, they are neither as popular nor globally recognized as Sonic himself. He continues to be used for cross-overs in video games, movies, and cultural entertainment in general.

Siliconera reports (via Ryokutya2089) that SEGA is planning on a Sonic theme park as their next goal for the blue hedgehog. They source Sonic the Hedgehog producer Takashi Iizuka and art director Kazuyuki Hoshino. While the complete statement has not yet been released, they are suspected to be included in upcoming interviews that Famitsu did with Iizuka and Hoshino for the Sonic 30th Anniversary event. It is expected to be released in Famitsu‘s July 8, 2021, Edition and online June 24, 2021.

This news comes alongside the announcement that SEGA wants to turn the iconic character into a VTuber, which is a virtual YouTuber, by using a virtual avatar while they speak to their chat and play video games. VTubers are pretty influential in the gaming space, so it makes sense for SEGA to want to tap into this area. It is a form of streaming content that is more popular in Japan, although perhaps more mainstream and iconic characters could make this bigger globally. Hopefully, the column being released for the 30th Anniversary event will provide a bit more information on the specifics of these projects.

Some of the more recent entries in the video game series are a bit underwhelming, although the character himself continues to be one that audiences like to see.  The studio holds a lot of expectations for the blue hedgehog after the live-action film has done so well. With Sonic the Hedgehog 2 expected on April 8, 2022, a new Sonic video game available on all platforms and another animated series titled Sonic Prime arriving in 2022, a VTuber project, and a theme park, there is a lot in the works for the character. Pending the success of some of these goals, Sonic the Hedgehog will continue to be a significant focus for the video game company moving forward.
