Amidst the heartache and melodrama of finding love in New York City, Sex and the City never ceases to show its fans that laughter is often better than a new pair of Manolos for soothing the soul. Comedy is infused on some level into nearly every character, from Big’s sly asides to Charlotte’s indignant fussing over something petty.

Even the characters to whom sadness is inherent, like self-effacing Stanford or indignant former party girl Lexi, leave fans with hilarious one-liners and memorable moments, proving that the funniest characters on Sex and the City remind fans to see the humor in all things.

10 Steve

With his unruly mop of curls and impish grin, it’s hard not to see Steve as a lovable goofball. He’s too kind to make fun of other people so he makes fun of himself, and his antics to make Miranda -or Brady- laugh reveal his big heart and even bigger sense of humor.

Steve is able to crack a joke and make fans laugh about his testicular cancer revelation, which allows the gravity of his situation to be balanced with humor, the only way he’ll be able to get through it.

9 Harry

From the moment Harry walks in on Charlotte’s meeting with her then-current divorce lawyer, complaining about bagels with mustard on his face, it’s clear that he’s not just brashly confident, he’s also a great physical comedian.

From trying to woo Charlotte in his friend’s bachelor pad (complete with animal print and leather furniture) to striding around naked in Charlotte’s posh Park Ave apartment, Harry is often funny without even trying, and his ability to make her laugh is what makes her fall for him almost over anything else.

8 Bobby Fine

Effervescent and theatrical lounge entertainer Bobby Fine appears for the first time in an episode detailing his very “not gay” wedding, the intricacies, and delicacies of which make for a hilarious weekend getaway as the girls try to deduce how he could be marrying Bitsy Von Miffling.

Bobby’s comedy comes from the many double entendres and innuendos that are meant to confuse the people around him, and as portrayed by the comedic genius Nathan Lane, he succeeds in never becoming the punchline himself.

7 Carrie

As Big tells Carrie so memorably in Season 1, there are hundreds of supermodels in New York City, but what men really want is a woman who can make them laugh. Carrie certainly has the ability to make people laugh, from sarcastic one-liners and cringe-humor to bombastic displays of slapstick comedy.

Much of Carrie’s comedy comes from her neurotic over-analyzing, which manifests itself in hilarious ways, like when Carrie breaks wind for the first time in front of Big and thinks their entire relationship is over. And while watching Carrie spectacularly overthink a situation will always bring the giggles, fans will laugh just as easily when she adopts a thick Brooklyn accent and pays homage to the balls of the ’80s and ’90s by vogue-ing at a rooftop garden party.

6 Lexi

Lexi might have declared that “New York is over” but she was anything but, with her single appearance in the series providing some of its biggest laughs. Unfortunately, they all occurred at her own expense, and eventual demise at a swanky party thrown by Carrie’s editor Enid Frick.

The former It Girl and party hopper memorably acted age-inappropriate, upsetting the posh collective at Enid’s apartment with her uproarious attitude and declarations, somehow turning a morbid death into a final curtain call immortalized through broad sensational comedy.

5 Victoria

Though she appears – as so many of the girls’ friends outside their tight quartet do – only once, Victoria’s presence as the hostess of a purse party is so over-the-top that she’s as memorable as one of her purse creations, plastic fruit and all.;

While she appears cheerful and upbeat on the surface, the baggage of her last breakup threatens to destroy her new bags, and by the end of the party, she’s a bull in a Fendi shop.

4 Anthony

A stalwart friend to Charlotte since her Trey days, Anthony is the stylish devil on her shoulder, always saying what the prim Park Ave princess can’t. With a firm, “Char!” and a quick admonishment, Anthony always finds a clever way of changing her perspective through his astute observations about love, men, and home furnishings.

Anthony often seems to exist solely to provide comic relief, especially if it results in Charlotte being embarrassed in public. His petty arguments with Stanford are particularly amusing, considering Anthony is forced to take what he dishes out.

3 Stanford

Like Anthony is to Charlotte, so Stanford is to Carrie, providing a shoulder to lean on as well as a mouthpiece for some of Carrie’s internal struggles. Stanford is more deserving of credit than being a sardonic earpiece, however, with his particular brand of humor spawning from self-deprecation.

While Stanford can wallow a bit in his inadequacies, he finds fulfillment in his sarcastic commentary delighting those around him, and so while his Eeyore-esque behavior may be performative, at least he makes people laugh.

2 Samantha

When fans first meet the coy and confident Samantha, it’s hard to imagine her screaming at two teenagers while lobbing melons through the windows of her ex-boyfriend’s beach house, but the dynamic nature of her personality made her both captivating and hilarious.

Whether it’s using fruit to simulate breasts, or donning multiple disguises to shadow a cheating lover, the humor comes from Sam never doing anything in an understated way. Her inherent volatility combined with her sense of sarcasm can also be used for a good cause, such as helping fellow cancer survivors find liberation through humor.

1 Miranda

Don’t let Miranda’s collected exterior distract from the fact that she’s a master of deadpan humor, satire, and subtle sarcasm. She has a sharp response for every single situation, including why there are no single men in New York (“We’re at my date’s wake so…yeah.”), Charlotte’s obsession with finding Prince Charming, Samantha’s adventurous sexcapades, or Carrie’s melodramatic love life.

Miranda uses humor to diffuse situations, but her snarky comments often convey exactly what fans are thinking, making her the consistently most amusing character in the series.
