Netflix’s Sex Education is a bonafide internet sensation, an immensely binge-able show about puberty, high school, love, and relationships. The series follows Asa Butterfield as Otis Milburn as he leads a sex therapy clinic at his school with tough loner girl Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey), taking cues from his parents who are actual sex therapists.

While there are plenty of heartwarming and fist-pumping moments on the show, it also has lots of hilarious, laugh out loud moments, and some that are so awkward and cringe-worthy they are begging to be memed. Without further ado, here are 10 hilarious memes only Sex Education fans will understand.

10 Jean Milburn For The Win

Gillian Anderson has been a legend for the better part of the last thirty years beginning with her role as Dana Scully on The X-Files. Anderson’s latest role as Jean Milburn, sex therapist and mother of one very awkward teenage boy, is iconic in its own right. It allows her comedic chops to shine.

Fans of Anderson and Sex Education alike have to bow down to Jean’s kimono game and recognize the absolute star power along with the multitude of facial expressions she uses to communicate so much without saying hardly anything.

9 Eric Is A Legend, Too

If there’s one thing that’s clear, Eric Effiong is more than just the gay sidekick to his awkward straight white best friend Otis. Played beautifully by Ncuti Gatwa, Eric shines as he comes into his own and finds his inner voice.

While he is the object of mockery and bullying in the first season, Eric learns how to use his confidence to display his authentic self in all its glory. Eric even gets caught in the middle of a controversial love triangle. We can all agree that Eric deserves the best.

8 So Many Thoughts On Eric And Adam

There’s the age-old adage that if a boy is mean to you, it means he likes you. It’s a gross excuse for bullying and misogyny, but in the case of Adam and Eric, Adam’s homophobic behavior turns out to be a very real way to mask his hidden desires.

This ultimately brings us back to the “Eric Deserves Better” meme, but either way, there’s no way anyone who watches Sex Education will walk away without having lots of opinions on Adam and Eric, some of which may be that they saw it coming.

7 Finding Solidarity

Like any good high school show, Sex Education depicts the highs and lows of adolescence including the many social circles and all that comes along with that.

When popular mean girl Ruby is at risk of being slut-shamed by the entire school due to the way her vagina looks, her friends, and eventually those beyond her social circle, stand up in a Spartacus moment and claim it is their vagina, too. It’s an instantly iconic moment that’s equal parts sweet and hilarious and begging to be memed.

6 Ola Is Pansexual

While Otis and Ola are a cute couple, their relationship is mostly set up to serve as a corner of the love triangle for Otis and Maeve. So when Ola, through her odd but sweet friendship with Adam, realizes she’s pansexual, it makes perfect sense, especially since she already had a queer sensibility about her.

Similar to the viewers who saw Adam and Eric’s relationship coming, some people could tell Ola was not straight from the jump, but the reveal is part of what makes Sex Education a great watch.

5 Eric Is An Icon

This list could honestly be ten memes just about Eric. In addition to being truly the best best friend on any teen show ever, along with one of the most fashionable, Eric is also deeply funny with some of the most quotable lines from the series.

Using the classic “poet and poem” format, this meme recalls the time Eric taught his fellow classmate about proper hygiene in the bathroom. The poem, in this case, showcases his trademark style and flamboyance (and specific British accent) to hilarious effect.

4 Otis Supports Eric

Sex Education is a lot of things. A show about puberty, high school, first loves, and relationships. But at its core is Otis and Eric’s deeply sweet and highly modern friendship, completely free of any tropes or stereotypes about what a relationship between two male friends is supposed to be.

While the two certainly make fun of each other a lot, they always have each other’s backs no matter what, and that includes when Eric fails miserably at jazz band in front of the entire school during assembly.

3 And Eric Supports Otis

As we mentioned, there are plenty of laughs to go along with Otis and Eric’s friendship. In the first season of Sex Education, Otis finally has a sexual awakening of his own and has to learn how to control himself, experiencing what every boy (and teenager) does, but maybe a little bit later than most.

It is all too funny for viewers and Eric alike, especially since it makes Otis so uncomfortable. The moment also showcases how sometimes good friends can’t help but laugh at each other, even when they care.

2 Otis’s Awakening, Though…

Sex Education doesn’t shy away from showing a plethora of teenage sexual activity. It can be shocking at times, not because these things don’t happen in real life, but because they’re so rarely depicted so honestly and awkwardly on television.

Otis’s status as a pubescent late bloomer is mined similarly for laughs but is also highly relatable for anyone who was once a teenager without control over their body. And for those viewers who may still be going through it, a meme can make it all feel a little less embarrassing.

1 Jackson’s Swimming Shame

One of the darker parts of Sex Education involves Jackson and his singular devotion to swimming, thanks to his incredibly overbearing – bordering on abusive – mom. Anytime that Jackson tries to act like a normal teenager and take a break, his mom brings his focus back to the sport, treating him like a racehorse.

This leads to some devastating events in the second season, and ultimately, he quits the swim team. After such a heavy storyline, viewers certainly needed a laugh, and combining anything with Game of Thrones will almost always guarantee one.
