After it was revealed that Sex Education will be getting a season  4 on Netflix, fans were delighted to hear they would be able to see their favorite Moordale students once more (especially since it will allow them to see resident mean girl, Ruby Matthews, again).

In season 3, Ruby (Mimi Keene) became more of a main character after spending the last two seasons in the background. However, there were certainly no complaints as it allowed them to get to know her in more depth. Not only did viewers get to meet her father (David Layde) but they also got to see a more vulnerable side to her due to her relationship with Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield). Unfortunately, her arc was abruptly cut short in favor of other storylines, which has led fans to demand that she get more screentime in season 4 for many reasons.

8 Her Parents Should Be More Involved In Season 4

With the main characters’ parents often making regular appearances on the show, it would make sense for Ruby’s parents to feature more too if the writers decide to give her a more prominent role on the show. While fans have already been introduced to Ruby’s father, some have been wondering if her mother would also make an appearance in the future too.

It would be great to see more of Ruby’s home life since it’s pretty clear that she idolizes her father and loves her parents a lot. With Otis getting on well with her father, it would be interesting to see how he would react if they met up again or if he helped Ruby through her first heartbreak. There’s still so much to explore here.

7 Otis & Ruby’s Arc Lacked Closure

In season 3, many fans were surprised to see that Ruby was in a casual relationship with Otis since they ran in opposite social circles. However, due to Keene and Butterfield’s natural chemistry, fans soon realized they had the potential to become one of the best couples on Sex Education. Not only was Ruby more open with Otis but viewers also saw Otis grow more confident when they were dating.

Sadly, the relationship (and Ruby’s arc) were cut short after Ruby told Otis that she loved him. After that, Ruby’s character was shelved in favor of other characters’ arcs. With the show now renewed for season 4, it would be great if the writers give this storyline real closure – whether it’s with the two ending up together again or having a conversation about why it didn’t work. It would certainly be a waste to not have them share anymore scenes after they proved a hit in season 3.

6 More Time Exploring Ruby’s Friendship With Anwar & Olivia

In season 3, it was revealed that Ruby had never invited Anwar Bakshi (Chaneil Kular) and Olivia Hanan (Simone Ashley) to her house because she was worried that her working-class background would lead to them judging her (affecting her reputation too). Therefore, when she invited them to her house after she split up with Otis, fans knew this was a big moment for The Untouchables as it meant that Ruby was opening up and letting them in.

Now that she has made quite a significant step in their friendship, fans are hoping the writers will dedicate some time to explore these dynamics some more and see if their bond will continue to grow stronger. It would be quite interesting to see if Ruby will end up being as supportive as them if they find themselves in need of comfort.

5 Ruby Should Get The Chance To Form New Friendships

While many fans do love the bond between The Untouchables, one of the many delights that came from the third season was the formation of several friendships (some of which no Sex Education fan saw coming). For instance, during “Episode 3,” the viewers saw Ruby and Adam Groff (Connor Swindells) bond over their love for Keeping Up with the Kardashians and everything else reality-related.  She even managed to strike up several conversations with Eric Effiong (Ncuti Gatwa), which fans also enjoyed.

Now that the writers have shown how well Ruby can integrate with the other characters, it would be good if the writers could focus on some of these friendships or create new ones. It’s possible that viewers could see Adam and Ruby talk about their breakups with Otis and Eric, or Ruby and Aimee Gibbs (Aimee Lou Wood) re-establishing their friendship.

4 Fans Should See How The Season 3 Events Impacted Ruby Overall

After undergoing some major character development, it would be a huge disappointment if Ruby reverted back to her “mean girl” tendencies – especially since she opened up and allowed people to see that she was a nice person deep down. Rather, it would be interesting to see how her first time falling in love, getting her heartbroken, and introducing her friends to an important part of her life will impact Ruby going forward.

Will she continue to interact with Otis? Will she still introduce people to her father? Will she start treating people nicely since she has experienced pain firsthand? With Ruby defending Moordale and Eric and Otis from Hope Hadden (Jemima Kirke) in “Episode 7,” it does seem as if she will continue to change for the better. However, her arc would be severely undermined if they just pretended that this never happened.

3 Ruby Could Begin A New Romance With Someone

After witnessing Otis and Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey) standing closely together in “Episode 5,” and realizing that Otis was in love with the bibliophile, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if Ruby decided to move on. Although Ruby might decide to focus on her studies, there is also a chance that she may end up starting another romance with another character. However, could her romance with Otis affect the other relationships she forms?

Since Ruby confessed to Otis that she loved him and it was the first time she had ever said it, it could prove to be a fascinating storyline as it will allow fans to see if she will let herself be that vulnerable again. There’s a possibility she may feel insecure and refuse to do so, however, it would be nice for Ruby to eventually realize that she has found someone who loves her as she does them.

2 Ruby Can Provide Much Comic Relief

Although there have been plenty of moments where Ruby has been a bit harsh or overstepped the line with her comments, there have also been scenes where she provided much comic relief. In season 3, the writers changed up her type of humor a bit by focusing more on her reactions to situations rather than the insults (e.g. her reaction to the birthing video or checking to see if she broke her nails during the near bus crash).

While her comments have provided a few laughs or two, it would be great to see the writers continue to include the subtle comedy as well as it feels quite natural. With the exception of Eric, no one else is able to pull this off successfully so this should be used to the writers’ advantage in season 4.

1 Mimi Keene Deserves To Have More Time

After participating in the show for three years and now only getting a bit more screen time, it wouldn’t be fair to reduce Mimi Keene’s character back to a supporting/recurring role. With many news outlets and fans believing that Keene’s character was the breakout star of season 3, the writers would be foolish not to capitalize on her talents as, at this point, fans are interested in her character the most.

Not only did she manage to divide even the most loyal Maeve/Otis shippers into thinking Ruby/Otis made the better couple on Sex Education, but fans completely changed their opinion on her once they got a glimpse of the vulnerable teen just trying to protect herself. If season 4 is to be the last, fans would love it if the writers give Ruby a happy ending after everything she’s been through.
