Sex Education season 3’s ending is its best yet for Otis and Maeve. The pair have been friends since season 1 of the Netflix series, opening Moordale Secondary’s sex clinic to offer advice to their fellow classmates for a fee. For as long as they have known each other, Otis and Maeve have also shared a reciprocal romantic interest. After several false starts and some drama, season 3 finally got them on the same page, even if it didn’t end in the way viewers may have expected it to.

For most of Sex Education season 3, Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Maeve (Emma Mackey) were not speaking to each other. This was, mostly, due to Isaac deleting Otis’ voicemail love confession to Maeve at the end of season 2. Maeve’s lack of response made Otis believe she didn’t want anything to do with him and it made her confused as to why he was being so distant. Once they cleared the air about what happened and their still existing feelings for each other, Otis and Maeve tentatively moved forward into couples territory. Being together romantically was short-lived, however, after Maeve was accepted into a writing program in New York City.

While Maeve and Otis had to part ways at the end of the season 3 finale, it wasn’t on bad or awkward terms. That, in and of itself, was a step up from previous finales. Unlike the other two seasons, their season 3 ending in Sex Education was more organic, with an unspoken promise that they would continue seeing each other in the future. Their relationship now was simply put on pause, but it wasn’t necessarily a roadblock they couldn’t get past. Otis and Maeve’s line of communication was now open and there was a sense that they could finally be honest without derailing their relationship at all. Maeve leaving for America so soon after they got together makes their separation in Sex Education’s season 3 finale all the more emotionally effective.

What’s more, their relationship having to be put on pause is because of Maeve’s decision to go to America for a few months, which is an authentic progression of her season 3 arc. She made the right choice for herself and Otis, who supported her, would still be there when she came back. Their parting ways wasn’t due to any internal issues they were having with each other — there were no other people standing in the way and nothing left unsaid between them any longer. And it’s the lack of contrived drama that certainly helped Otis and Maeve’s season 3 ending be the best one so far.

They know they want to be together, but their individual dreams make it so their romance has to take a backseat for a bit. The relationship tension headed into Sex Education season 4 could be due to the long-distance relationship or from having to be away from each other for a longer time than usual. But all of these things can be sorted out, especially now that Otis and Maeve are finally on the same page after so long.
