The US version of Shameless has a plethora of characters, and while none of them can be regarded as true protagonists, there are some who are invested in better storylines than the others. Emmy Rossum’s Fiona Gallagher is one of the most addictive characters on the show; so much so that after she left in season nine, season ten dipped immensely in ratings.

Fiona Gallagher is someone who runs the Gallagher house and has grown up in the rough South Side of Chicago. She pretty much acted as the mother to her siblings, and while some of her character traits are lovable, there are certain times when she brings out the worst in herself.

10 Careless…Sometimes

Fiona can be a bit careless at times, especially when things aren’t going well for her, both in her professional life and personal life. When her siblings had no one, she was the one who stepped up to take care of them, and that required a lot of concentration and patience, but as they grew up, Fiona started becoming a bit more reckless.

The worst thing that happened thanks to her carelessness was when she brought drugs with her in the house and just left it in the kitchen. Unfortunately, the then little Liam ate them and he could have died of an overdose.

9 Decision Making

Decision making isn’t the strongest suit of the whole Gallagher family, so it’s expected that Fiona makes wrong decisions at the very wrong time every once in a while.

Her professional life, as well as personal life, has been wrecked thanks to her ability to make rash decisions. In season nine, Fiona without even thinking decided to invest in a property, and it backfired because she just didn’t have enough funds. It not only led to her being homeless, but she also slipped into a minor depression.

8 Low Self Esteem

There are only one or maybe two kids in the Gallagher family who are egotistical and have a high sense of esteem. Of course, Lip Gallagher is one, and the other is Liam.

Only these two seem to believe that they deserve the good things in life, while Fiona’s choices suggest that she deserves the unhappiness. It’s like she loves to wreck her life, like when she did with Mike and his junkie brother Robbie. She particularly chose a psychopathic junkie over a caring boyfriend like it’s what she deserved.

7 Too Selfless

While at the start of the series Fiona acted as the selfless mother to her siblings, as the show went on, she started getting away from them. Fiona is a very good human being who doesn’t hesitate to put the needs of others above her, but she does it so often that it’s detrimental to her own well-being.

In the years of her life when she was meant to enjoy every minute, there she was doing multiple jobs trying to keep her siblings safe. If there was ever someone who deserved to get out of the South Side it was her, and she did it in the season nine finale.

6 Puts Herself Under Too Much Pressure

From a very young age, Fiona learned to handle pressure, as she had four brothers and one sister to take care of.

But, as the show went on, she kept putting herself under insane amounts of pressure, both in her personal life and professional life, and it was only a matter of time before she broke down. Working multiple jobs over coupled with juggling her love life and taking care of her siblings was too much.

5 Alcohol Problems

Is there someone in the Gallagher family who doesn’t love alcohol? So far, Ian, Carl, Debbie, and Liam have done a good job, but the same cannot be said about Fiona and Lip, both of whom have resorted to the ways of their father after suffering huge setbacks in their respective lives.

Fiona in particular drank too much in season nine after she became cash strapped, thanks to a deal gone wrong. She took out her frustrations by drinking too much alcohol; so much so that even Frank confronted her about it.

4 Drug Problems

This isn’t something that everyone in the Gallagher family suffers from. These drug problems are exclusive to Fiona and Frank. While the latter openly admits his love for drugs, Fiona is a bit different, as she started substance abuse after meeting Robbie, Mike’s (one of Fiona’s boyfriends) deranged brother.

Again, because of a setback in her personal life, instead of trying to overcome it, Fiona seemed to soothe herself through drugs.

3 Controlling And Authoritative

It’s understandable that Fiona wanted to take care of her siblings and give them the right example when they were small, but what one cannot understand is the fact that she continued to force her opinions on her family once they grew up.

Lip and Ian, in particular, didn’t like Fiona’s controlling nature and in season nine, Ian snapped when Fiona was trying to take his decisions on his behalf. Nevertheless, Fiona did understand her mistakes in the end.

2 Anger Problems

If there’s one problem with Fiona, it is her anger issues. She has a tendency of lashing out at someone and projecting her anger over something on someone else.

She loves to scream as well. Fiona’s anger problems come to the forefront whenever things aren’t going the way she intended them to or something out of the ordinary happens.

1 Choice In Men

Fiona’s choice in men is not good, to put it mildly. To start things off, she fell in love with Steve, who turned out to be a lying criminal, before she decided to marry a person she barely knew.

Of course, that marriage didn’t last at all because Steve returned and so did the intimacy between the two. Fiona was also close to marrying the drug addicted Sean, and she was also in a relationship with a married man. It’s not really a surprise that she left the South Side single.
