A new clip from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings reveals the fate of the fake Mandarin, Trevor Slattery. The character of Trevor Slattery was first introduced in Iron Man 3 (portrayed by Ben Kingsley) as an actor portraying a false version of The Mandarin, the powerful leader of The Ten Rings organization. Unbeknownst to Slattery, he was being used as a puppet to promote terrorist attacks in the name of The Mandarin by the real villain of Iron Man 3, Guy Pearce’s Aldrich Killian. Slattery was sent to prison by the end of the film and was later broken out by members of The Ten Rings in the Marvel short, All Hail The King, where his fate afterwards was unknown.

The real Mandarin is featured in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, played by Tony Leung, but it’s a more complicated namesake. In the film, Leung’s real name is Wenwu and he rejects the name of “Mandarin,” saying it was made-up to spread fear in the west as it sounded more sinister. Wenwu, who is actually the father of Shang-Chi, does carry the actual ten rings and utilizes them in his search for more power and revenge.

In a new clip from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the fate of the fake Mandarin, Trevor Slattery, is finally revealed. When Shang-Chi and Awkwafina’s Katy arrive at Wenwu’s compound, they discover a man living underneath, locked in a room with his only companion, Morris, a faceless creature from the mythical village of Ta Lo. Here, Slattery reveals his fate after the Marvel short, All Hail The King, saying he was broken out of prison to be killed by The Ten Rings, but launched into a performance of Macbeth just as he was to be executed, thereby entertaining his captors enough to keep him alive and perform for them on a weekly basis. Check out the clip below:

Ben Kingsley is once again portraying Slattery, which makes this his third appearance in the MCU as the character. Whether or not he continues to be a presence in the films is unknown, but Shang-Chi serves as a bit of a redemption of Slattery, who has seemingly been duped his whole life. There’s more to Slattery’s story shown later in the film, and he certainly assists in helping Shang-Chi accomplish his mission, while also bringing his faceless friend, Morris, along for the ride (and back to his home) and helping to defeat The Ten Rings organization.

Slattery has been a controversial character from the start, with Marvel Studios even using his Mandarin bit as a bait-and-switch in the marketing for Iron Man 3. Many thought that Kingsley was playing the actual villain from the comics, before it was revealed he was just a British actor in disguise. Obviously, this ruffled the feathers of many fans, while others enjoyed the ruse, but it left a void to be filled in showing a faithful adaptation of the famed villain. With Tony Leung’s portrayal now in the books and the legend of the “real” Mandarin now clear, this leaves Slattery free and clear to be explored on his own, which wouldn’t be that surprising to see happen given the crowd-pleasing presence he brings to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
