A real-life bus operator has given his opinion on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings iconic bus fight scene. Starring Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu, Shang-Chi introduces the eponymous Asian superhero from the comic books into the MCU. The film was released exclusively to theaters last August and was an instant blockbuster hit. It currently sits as the seventh highest grossing film of 2021, with Shang-Chi netting more than $430 million at the box office worldwide. Shang-Chi also received positive responses from critics who praised the predominantly Asian cast’s performances and the film’s impressive choreography and martial arts fight sequences.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

One memorable scene from Shang-Chi is the action-packed bus scene that happens a few minutes into the movie. It serves as an introduction to Shang-Chi’s character as a trained assassin despite living an ordinary life as a valet boy in San Francisco. In the scene, Shang-Chi and his friend Katy (Awkwafina) get ambushed while on their regular bus commute. The titular superhero fends off Razor Fist (Florian Munteanu) and his sidekicks in an intense show of punches and high-flying kicks. The commotion goes on while the bus driver gets injured as he scrambles to hit the brakes. In the end, the passenger bus gets sliced in half and comes to a screeching halt.

A bus operator from San Francisco’s Muni bus line recently watched Shang-Chi and took to Twitter to break down the film’s iconic scene. Using the handle @that_mc, the netizen started a long thread to give his thoughts on what would have transpired if the bus scene actually happened in real life. He began with light quips on how the 60-foot San Francisco Transit coach had better seats but was obviously going off route. He then raised serious points about road safety as the fight played on. In particular, he pointed out that the bus driver in the movie (played by Michael-Anthony Taylor) committed major driving violations such as not wearing his seatbelt and failing to hit the Parking and Emergency Brake located on the left control panel. Check out his interesting blow-by-blow analysis below:

Shang-Chi’s bus sequence was choreographed by renowned fight coordinator Andy Cheng who has worked with some of the biggest action stars including Jackie Chan. The scene, which lasted a full six minutes, reportedly took over a year to finish due to COVID-19 restrictions. The rigorous process paid off as the scene became an impressive show of martial arts choreography.

While Shang-Chi’s epic bus scene is obviously not a realistic depiction, it was truly a feast for the eyes. After all, Hollywood is all about making creative adjustments to give moviegoers a thrilling cinematic experience. Marvel surely succeeded in this, as proven by fans and critics’ rave reviews. There’s no doubt that Shang-Chi has made a successful dive into the MCU and it will be exciting to see what the superhero has in store for fans in his future appearances.
