Lucy Liu has been cast in Shazam! Fury of the Gods as one of the film’s primary villains. Shazam! 2 will see Asher Angel and Zachary Levi return as Billy Batson and Shazam, this time set against the villainous Hespera, played by Helen Mirren. Henry Gayden and David F. Sandberg are both set to return to write and direct, respectively. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 2, 2023.

After a lackluster stretch of DC films, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League, the first Shazam! was seen by many as a light at the end of the tunnel. The film’s lighthearted adventure story and strong comedic style, amplified by Angel and Levi’s stellar performances, helped put it alongside Wonder Woman as one of the best films of the DCEU. With luck, Shazam!’s success will be built on in the upcoming sequel.

Per The Wrap, Lucy Liu has now joined the cast of Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Liu will play Kalypso, daughter of the god Atlas and sister to Mirren’s Hespera. Kalypso will be one of the film’s main antagonists, with her and Hespera likely forming a villainous duo for Shazam to do battle against. Fans still have a long while to wait until Shazam! Fury of the Gods arrives in theaters, but it looks like the film is setting itself up for success with cast additions like Liu, Mirren, and Rachel Zegler.

Shazam! 2 will be the third entry in the series by the time it comes out, as Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam film is set to premiere in July of 2022. That film has been pitched mainly as a universe-builder for Shazam!’s corner of the DCEU, introducing members of the Justice Society of America along with Johnson’s eponymous antihero. With the first Shazam! having earned such high praise from critics and fans alike, the promise of more branching stories in that world is exciting.

Though Shazam! was originally envisioned as part of the broader DCEU story, meant to intersect with the likes of Henry Cavill’s Superman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, the film that ultimately released felt isolated from what came before. Given the critical beating the franchise had taken, it was probably for the best that Billy Batson’s story got a little bit of distance. As the DCEU continues to spread out into more independent films, Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods could be the start of a whole new cinematic universe.
