Warning! Spoilers for Avengers #48 by Marvel Comics below.

Marvel’s She-Hulk is set to take on a new terrifying form, as she will become the Winter Hulk in the World War She-Hulk storyline in the Avengers ongoing series. On Wednesday, Marvel Comics revealed more details about the upcoming story arc, where Jennifer Walters gets captured by the Red Guardian and the Russian Winter Guard. In Avengers #48, She-Hulk will be subjected to the Red Room and becomes a new kind of hero.

The new World War She-Hulk storyline is inspired by the original Hulk’s iconic tale, as his comic followed the events of Planet Hulk, where the Illuminati send the Jade Giant to space fearing he became impossible to control. In World War Hulk, by Greg Pak, John Romita Jr., Klaus Janson, and Christina Strain, the Hulk returned to Earth to get revenge on the heroes who banished him from the planet. She-Hulk’s similarly named arc is set to be quite different, as Jennifer Walters will take on a new terrifying form as an agent of the Winter Guard.

Marvel Comics released a new promo image and solicit for Avengers #48 by Jason Aaron and Javier Garron which teases “Winter Hulk is coming…” The synopsis reveals She-Hulk will face the Red Guardian and the Russian Guard, who are trying to stop her. She’ll be taken prisoner by the Russian team and be sent to the Red Room, the same academy that trained Black Widow into being a deadly assassin. With the training and (assumed) brain-washing) from the Red Room, Jennifer Walters will transform into the Winter Hulk.

In the cover by Garron and David Curiel, She-Hulk has undergone significant change. Jennifer is seen with red skin just like the Red Hulk, while wearing an all-white costume that’s similar to Black Widow’s and Yelena Belova’s Red Room suits. The prospect of She-Hulk becoming a combination of Black Widow and Winter Soldier is a terrifying thought, as she has more than enough pure strength already to do some serious damage.

The Avengers will likely be tasked with taking down their brainwashed ally, but given her new training and Red Hulk-like appearance, it’s not going to be easy to convince her to come back on the side of good. The Winter Hulk is set to be one of the most terrifying Hulk’s ever and for good reason – the strength plus skill is truly an unfair combination. The Winter Hulk debuts when Avengers #48 comes to comic book stores in September 2021.
