Warning: SPOILERS for Avengers #28

In Marvel’s Avengers #28, She-Hulk just put on quite the display with her new Wakandan threads, showing off a gamma blast that should scare even her Hulk family. She-Hulk introduced the suit to Captain Marvel in Avengers #27 but, in keeping with her current personality, was not very forthcoming about the particulars. Apparently, She-Hulk just preferred to show rather than tell everyone about her explosive new potential.

The upgrade comes at a chaotic time for She-Hulk – both romantically and professionally. Particularly because it is not the first power-up She-Hulk has experienced in Jason Aaron’s recent Avengers run thanks to the Celestials. Not only did the Celestial’s boost disrupt She-Hulk’s physical powers, but it has also unbalanced the superheroine mentally pushing her towards a Hulk form more like that of her cousin. An attempt to manage the effects of her run-in with the Celestials led She-Hulk to Wakanda and a brand-new power.

A breakdown of the suit (via CBR) explains the intricacies and implications of She-Hulk’s powerful accessory. She-Hulk’s new gear is the result of a collaboration between Jennifer Walters and Black Panther in the hopes of controlling She-Hulk’s off-the-charts gamma radiation. Jennifer has been working with T’Challa to rein in her wild gamma emissions through “psychoactive calisthenics,” a high-tech version of anger management therapy shown pitting She-Hulk against her other personalities in Avengers #20. However, the two were also working on a more physical solution it seems. Even better, not only does the suit contain She-Hulk’s gamma emissions, but it additionally stores it for later use as an extremely powerful blast.

There is a history of Hulks absorbing gamma radiation to power up, but using weaponized radiation as a long-range weapon is a rarity. The devastation Bruce Banner caused in World War Hulk with a similar ability makes the implications of She-Hulk’s gamma blast as terrifying as they are awesome. For now, the suit seems to be not only the answer to She-Hulk’s immediate problems but also a wildly powerful weapon for She-Hulk’s arsenal. The original intent behind the suit begs the question though: Can anything ever truly contain a Hulk for long?

It is hard not to focus on the physical consequences of this new suit, especially given that She-Hulk is far from being a jolly Jade Giantess currently. However, the power of She-Hulk’s new gamma blast should not overshadow Jennifer’s role in developing this new power. While Jennifer Walters doesn’t have the super-intelligence of Tony Stark or Shuri, she has always been characterized as smarter than the average superhero and adept at getting herself out of tricky situations. She-Hulk may be aiming the blast generated by her new suit, but it was thanks in part to her alter-ego that she even has it. Given this dichotomy, the suit could herald a new partnership between She-Hulk’s two sides or ramp up the internal conflict between these personalities.

In advance of her TV Show, it would be great to see She-Hulk take a further prominent role in this Avengers run to play out the possibilities of her new powers. Either way, the new suit seems to both contain and power up She-Hulk (for now), which can only be a good thing given Daredevil’s dire warnings (and the ominous hints of an alliance between some of Earth’s mightiest villains).

Avengers #28is on sale now, and readers can follow-up with this powerful revelation in Avengers #29, which is on sale on January 15, 2020.
