Update: Sigourney Weaver is Playing the Villain of The Defenders!

When it comes to iconic female movie stars, Sigourney Weaver is about as big as they come. She became a more recognizable name thanks to Ghostbusters, but she rose to stardom by playing Ripley in the Alien franchise. Since then, she has also joined the soon-to-be mega franchise that Avatar will become. Even though she is not the action star she once was, she is not shying away from big franchises. She is currently committed to three more Avatar films and possibly Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5, so her schedule is sure to stay busy for the foreseeable future.

Even with a ton of commitments, Weaver may not be done joining big and popular film franchises. If her latest tease is any indication, Weaver could be lining up a role to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

MCUExchange has noticed Weaver teasing a role in an upcoming Marvel film in a recent interview with Wired. As part of a larger conversation about the state of Hollywood’s obsession with franchises and superhero films, she revealed that she has been watching her fair share of Marvel movies recently and notes the caliber of actors that they are currently getting. But why exactly is she watching so many Marvel movies all of a sudden?

“I can’t tell you!” she says. Fair enough, but she will say she’s enthralled by the work Marvel is doing, and by the performers populating their ever-expanding universes. “How can you relate to someone flying around with a cape?” she asks. “That takes work.”

Unless Weaver is getting a head start on her Marvel re-watch in anticipation for Doctor Strange, a sudden rise in her interest is certainly intriguing. Weaver is exactly the type of high-caliber and recognizable name that Marvel has recently been targeting for roles in their films. If she was not actually be recruited to join the MCU, she could very well tell people that is not the case, but her decision to keep things such a secret will only further push theories of her casting.

As for who Weaver could be playing, the next film up for Marvel is Avengers: Infinity War and Untitled Avengers so any casting currently happening makes most sense for one of those films. Any potential role for Weaver in the next Avengers films is unknown at this point. Some other potential landing spots for Weaver could be Captain Marvel, as one of the biggest female action stars pairs up with the next big one, or even Ant-Man and the Wasp as Janet Van Dyne. If there is any truth to her potentially joining the MCU though, it could be some time before anything becomes official.
