Using a Silent Hill level mod, a fan of the first game managed to explore the Midwich Elementary map from the first-person perspective. Many, many years have passed since players were last allowed to navigate the haunted halls of Midwich Elementary School, though that changed in 2020 when Dead by Daylight’s Silent Hill Chapter added the school grounds as a playable map.

In terms of Silent Hill’s interactive adventures, the elementary school only ever appeared in the first mainline game. It famously appeared in the 2006 film and comic the Dying Inside comic adaptation, as well. Despite its limited use in media, however, Midwich Elementary has long haunted the memories of Silent Hill faithful who remember the terror wrought by Team Silent’s original adventure on PlayStation 1. Fans hold out hope for a chance to revisit the iconic locale on modern platforms, but there are also those who continue to find new ways of exploring Silent Hill’s horror-inducing school map.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Earlier this week, indie developer and Twitter user headwaregames shared first-person gameplay footage of the original Silent Hill’s Midwich Elementary map. The footage only shows the player traversing a single hallway, yet still manages to exemplify the locale’s overall creep factor. In a follow-up Twitter post, headwaregames explained that they accomplished such a feat by downloading the Silent Hill Level Viewer mod and noclipping through the map. Check out the user’s first-person trek through Silent Hill’s Midwich Elementary School in the video linked below:

If nothing else, the above clip makes a good case for why a potential Silent Hill remake would work well in first-person. If Capcom’s once-tormented Resident Evil series can reinvigorate itself by switching out its classic camera perspective, the Konami-owned horror franchise may benefit from following a similar path. But it remains a mystery as to whether or not Konami plans on revisiting the series at all in the near future.

The first Silent Hill debuted in 1999 as a groundbreaking horror experience that went on to spawn several genre-defining sequels. To the chagrin of many a longtime fan, the final entry – Silent Hill: Book of Memories – hit store shelves in the fall of 2012 as a PlayStation Vita exclusive. Konami planned on reimagining the IP several years ago with Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima at the helm of Silent Hills. Not long after Kojima’s beloved P.T. demo hit PSN, however, a falling out between the game developer and Konami resulted in the project’s cancellation. Silent Hill as a whole has remained dormant ever since.
