Warning! Spoilers for King in Black #5 ahead!

The eventful finale of King in Black also brought a big change for the Silver Surfer. The former Herald of Galactus got a suitable reward for his valiant actions during the crisis. The Silver Surfer is one of the few heroes that had history with the King in Black before he came to Earth. He encountered Knull after being pulled through a black hole and displaced billions of years into the past in Silver Surfer: Black #1, written by Donny Cates and illustrated by Tradd Moore.

During the fight with Knull’s acolytes, the Surfer has to generate a small star using the power cosmic to escape. That causes Silver Surfer’s hand to blacken, and the deterioration eventually spreads to the entirety of his body. The loss of his iconic shining form has been a constant indication that the Silver Surfer is not at full strength. However, that doesn’t stop him from making a difference. King in Black #4 ends with the darkened Norrin Radd smuggling the Enigma Force into his body and through Knull’s symbiote barrier around Earth. This proves to be the act that tips the scales and leads to Knull’s defeat.

The Silver Surfer is also finally able to restore himself to his usual glittery glory while helping to bring an end to the God of Symbiotes. King in Black #5, written by Donny Cates with art by Ryan Stegman, picks after up the Silver Surfer has delivered the Enigma Force to Earth. The Enigma Force is the powerful mystical energy previously known for being responsible for turning hosts into Captain Universe. The Silver Surfer has been Captain Universe in the past, but on this occasion, ferrying the mystical energy has the effect of completely removing the tainted blackness from his body. The Enigma Force exists as the opposing light to Knull’s darkness and proves to be the key to defeating him and curing the Surfer.

During Silver Surfer: Black, the Norrin describes himself as weakened, broken, and dying, as he battles the darkness overtaking his metallic flesh. He expends massive amounts of his power cosmic fighting off Knull billions of years in the past. In addition to his shadowy tint, that journey also gives him some solace for his actions while under the service of Galactus. Thor kills the Silver Surfer’s creator and former master, in Thor #6. Norrin expresses some regret to Thor, but seems at peace. Taking it all in, the Silver Surfer has been cured and possibly returned to his full power, has come to peace with his past horrors, and no longer has the shadow of Galactus hanging over him.

None of the characters in the final issue of King in Black make any obvious comment or reference to the Silver Surfer’s restoration. Thor has certainly encountered the Surfer in his weakened state and should notice. However, there is a lot going on. Blade defeats an army of vampires in one sweep. Venom wields an axe made of Mjolnir and the Surfer’s board, after joining with the Enigma Force, and before ultimately becoming the new King in Black. The Silver Surfer returning to his full cosmic potential is huge news, and thanks to that change, he doesn’t need the spotlight this time. He shines on his own.
