Actor Simon Pegg has teased that he has had discussions with TheCornetto Trilogy director/collaborator Edgar Wright about a potential new project. Wright and Pegg’s careers have been tightly knit ever since their first major collaboration in the cult TV series Spaced. From there, the pair went on to co-write all three instalments of the loosely connected Cornetto Trilogy: Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End. Wright directed all three, while Pegg starred in leading roles. The comedy trilogy was beloved by fans and critics, who praised the sharp wit in both in its script and in the filmmaking.

Since the end of the series in 2013, Wright and Pegg have remained friends while moving on to have their own separate careers. Wright has gone on to push past his boundaries as a filmmaker, directing the straight-faced thriller Baby Driver, a nostalgic horror feature in Last Night in Soho, and even a documentary, The Sparks Brothers. Likewise, Pegg has become an established Hollywood star, having key supporting roles in major franchise series such as Star Trek and the Mission: Impossible movies.

In an interview with ComicBook, Pegg teased that his collaborations with Wright might not be finished just yet. Pegg confirmed that, as he and Wright have been friends for years, there are definitely discussions going on between the two in regards to another project. The main issue, Pegg clarifies, is aligning the schedules of both parties, since as both men are considerably more in demand as compared to the days of their low-budget roots.

With Edgar and I, we have to just get our schedules in order so that we can write together again, we’re talking about stuff, there’s been ideas thrown around and we’re circling something. But obviously he’s really busy, I’m really busy. It’s not like the old days when we were just trying to get seen and we had all that time. Now things are a little more complicated. But there’s room in my heart for all that stuff and I obviously want to work Edgar and Nick again because they’re my mates and it means we get to hang out more.”

While the two have gone in their separate directions since the end of The Cornetto Trilogy, a realignment of their career paths after a decade-long break would almost certainly produce a high-quality film, but also likely one that is considerably different from their previous work. Both men will have evolved creatively since 2013’s The World End and would be sure to bring a slightly different flavor to something produced within the context of the 2020s. It is also worth considering that Wright’s last feature Last Night in Soho, while well received critically, was unfortunately a major financial disappointment at the box office. Thus, the director may be more inclined to return to an older creative partnership, which always provided reliable box office results, for a new project.

The prospect of a new feature from the two will most certainly be of interest to fans of The Cornetto Trilogy who haven’t seen a combined effort from the two in nearly 10 years. It’s uncertain whether this new project would be a follow up to the beloved Cornetto Trilogy (making it a Quadrilogy) or something new entirely. Pegg also mentions fellow long-time collaborator Nick Frost, so it’s clear that if this project goes ahead, they would be ‘getting the band back together.’ From the way Pegg describes it, it feels like this potential upcoming project between him and Edgar Wright may only be a matter of time.
