According to posts, the real source code for The Simpsons: Hit & Run has been leaked online and players have successfully compiled it into a working game. First released in 2003, Hit & Run has been a classic in the eyes of many, building up a reputation as one of the most beloved games of all time. The game has built up such a massive reputation that even a Simpsons producer wants a remake for the title.

This isn’t a surprising proclamation to see made given the long-term admiration that many still have for the title. Hit & Run still has an active speedrunning community along with an active modding community, keeping the almost 20-year-old game alive to this day. Fans have also been calling for a remake of the classic for years, with some going so far as to remake The Simpsons: Hit & Run themselves.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

On August 22, it was revealed through GBATemp that supposedly, the entire source code for the beloved Simpsons game was released through an AnonFiles upload. The game is no stranger to leaks and development files being uploaded through the same source in the past, but this latest upload could be a game-changer for hardcore fans. According to posts about the leak online, some users claim to have already compiled the source code into a working copy of the game using a Windows XP virtual machine.

If true, this leak would have numerous benefits for fans. Mod creators could do so much more to modify the game’s files, the game could be ported to newer systems by fans, and the possibility is there for an actual fan-made remastering to the game’s dated graphics. Of course, none of this is as exciting as an official re-release, but it makes for an interesting bit of news that could lead to a number of cool fan-made projects.

This has been an exciting year for fans of the game, with recent developments such as the aforementioned fan remake for the first level of the game as well as a mod that turns all three levels into one, converting the game’s levels into an open-world Springfield devoid of loading screens. Should the leak indeed be true, there are practically no limits anymore for The Simpsons: Hit & Run and the dedicated community built around it.
