Sims 4’s Long-Neglected Children Finally Get New Activity Options

A new update for The Sims 4 has finally given children more activity options. Players have been asking for more interactivity for kids in The Sims, who have generally been neglected when it comes to gameplay. Thankfully, the free July 2021 The Sims 4 update introduces new abilities for children, as well as terrain tools, a food delivery service, and more.

The lack of gameplay for The Sims 4’s kids has long been an annoyance for many fans. Sims children have limited gameplay options compared to teens and adults and are unable to learn individual skills such as cooking, writing, and painting. Instead, kids’ skills are restricted to four groups: Creativity, Mental, Motor and Social. Simmers have also criticized the lack of children’s items, both in Build/Buy mode and Create-A-Sim. Developer Maxis recently introduced more child-friendly items, such as the highly requested Sims 4 bunk beds.

The July 2021 update, detailed by EA, continues that trend, introducing two new group activities for The Sims 4 children to take part in: cooking and gardening. These allow the whole family to join in the process, and kids earn Mental skill points for both activities. Builders also have something to look forward to, as a new terrain tool means natural bodies of water can now be built, replacing “cleverly disguised pools” previously created by Simmers. Players can also use the new Pond Objects to decorate their creations, with water options including Mossy Water and Pond Scum. The update also adds Zoomer Food Delivery, offering food delivery options beyond pizza.

As well as adding new content, the July 2021 Sims 4 update also fixes a host of bugs across both PC and console. Players recently discovered a glitch with the Discover University Expansion Pack that caused Sims to fail college despite meeting the necessary criteria to pass. The update has officially patched this bug, along with crashes when loading Island Living‘s Mua Pe’lam, Sims getting stuck in sleep mode, and a bug that caused Sims to dress in Cold Weather gear even when warm.

The update comes just before the release of the next expansion, The Sims 4 Cottage Living. The paid add-on will welcome the world of Henford-on-Bagley, introducing new activities including cross-stitching, canning, and farming. The pack, which releases on PC and console on July 22, is anticipated to be one of the best The Sims 4 packs of all time. Players who purchase the expansion before September 2 will receive three bonus items: the Rideable Bike, Gnome Statue, and Lighted Tree.
