Sing 2 will be premiering on VOD less than 3 weeks after it made its theatrical debut. The film, which is a sequel to the 2016 animated jukebox musical about anthropomorphic animals putting on a variety show, first came to theaters on December 22, 2021. Original co-directors Garth Jennings and Christophe Lourdelet have reteamed with that film’s star-studded cast including Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll, adding Bobby Cannavale, Pharrell Williams, Halsey, and U2 frontman Bono to the ensemble.

Sing 2 premiered at #2 behind Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was breaking box office records on its way to becoming the first pandemic era film to pass the $1 billion mark. Despite being prevented from taking the top slot, it has performed quite well at the box office. From a budget of $75 million, the film has already made $148 million worldwide, which most likely puts it in the black even taking publicity into consideration, though not substantially so. That total is just $6 million less than what its Christmas weekend franchise competitors The Matrix Resurrections and The King’s Man made put together.

On the official Sing 2 Instagram account, they made a post advertising the movie’s new VOD release date. The film will be available for rental and purchase on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Vudu, and more this Friday, January 7, 2022. The price range for rentals and purchasing is currently unknown, though it is likely they will initially skew closer to the $19.99 premium VOD pricing established toward the beginning of the pandemic. This transition to VOD is likely a response to the surge of the Omicron coronavirus variant that has been surging globally. Many entertainment organizations have been reassessing their pandemic response this winter in the face of this new threat. In fact, just today the Grammys put this year’s ceremony indefinitely on hold and the Sundance film festival converted to a fully virtual program.

Sing 2‘s exclusive theatrical window may have closed more swiftly than intended, but it’s already outperformed most of the films on the Legendary/WB slate. Those films premiered on HBO Max streaming simultaneously for their first month of theatrical distribution, and of the 2021 slate, only Godzilla vs. Kong and Dune made significant waves in the box office, outperforming expectations. Sing 2 had the opportunity to snag their slice of the box office pie during the holiday family movie season, but now that the next few months are looking extra dire for movie theaters, they’re embracing the theater-shy at-home audience who are staying put while keeping an eye on the case numbers.
