Sing 2 has serenaded its way into theaters, taking a substantial stance against the still-roaring Spider-Man: No Way Home. This animated follow-up to the 2016 film sees Buster Moon and his gang of anthropomorphic singing animals hit the big time, attempting to put together a massive show all while jumpstarting one retired superstar’s big return to the stage.

Much like the original film, Sing 2 connects with its audience through both humor and genuinely heartfelt moments. The movie manages to stick the landing in this way, leaving viewers with several quotable lines scattered throughout the 110-minute runtime.

Good Manners

“You’ll Be Pleased To Hear I Did Bring It Back With A Full Tank.” – Miss Crawly

Miss Crawly is Buster Moon’s assistant, played by director Garth Jennings, whose haphazard nature often leads to mishaps of hilarious proportions, especially considering the fact that she has only one good eye. The iguana often acts as comedic relief in both films, making her a fan-favorite among the cast.

When the group decides that they must recruit former rock legend Clay Calloway to join their newest show, Miss Crawly is dispatched to meet with him. However, she gets more than she bargained for, with Calloway’s security systems destroying her car. Upon returning the vehicle to the valet service in the city, Crawly chirps that she brought it back with a full tank of gas, completely ignoring that the car is barely still running.

The Piglets

“Norman: Release The Piglets!” – Rosita

Rosita is one of Sing 2‘s most likable characters, as she struggles to achieve her dreams in her middle age, all while balancing being a mother to dozens and dozens of rambunctious piglets. While Rosita’s family has a more minor role in the sequel than in the original film, they do come to her aid at one crucial point of the movie’s climax.

When the group must distract the arena’s security in order to put on their show, Rosita’s brood comes into play mightily, tearing the lobby apart with their greedy appetites and energetic rampages. The moment is a fun way to include the franchise’s running gag concerning Rosita’s absurdly large family, and a funny plot device to keep the story rolling.

The Pickup Line

“You Look Like A Goddess, And Lucky For You, It’s Free Ice Cream For All Goddesses Day!” – Alfonso

Sing 2 sees many members of the main cast find a love interest in their adventures in Redshore City. One such star-crossed lover is Tori Kelly’s Meena, the shy elephant with a magnificent voice. While practicing for her performance, Meena meets another elephant named Alfonso, played by Pharell Williams, and immediately falls in love.

One can’t blame Meena for being instantly attracted to Pharell’s character, as Alfonso wastes no time in delivering a pickup line for the ages, wherein he both calls her a goddess and gives her free ice cream. From that moment on, Meena’s heart was his, and with good reason.

A Long Time

“I Haven’t Even Heard One Of My Songs In Over Fifteen Years!” – Clay Calloway

Much of Sing 2‘s plot revolves around the gang attempting to reinvigorate the career of retired rockstar Clay Calloway, played by U2 lead singer Bono. Calloway has been missing from the music scene for over a decade, ever since the death of his beloved wife Ruby, refusing to perform ever again after her passing.

Ash (Scarlett Johansson) spends a large chunk of her screentime bonding with Calloway in an attempt to bring him back to his music. At one point, he snaps at her, revealing that he has not even listened to any of his music in fifteen years. This moment reveals just how broken Calloway has become, paving the way for his eventual return to the stage later in the film.

First Things First

“We’re Gonna Put This Show On Whether Crystal Likes It Or Not! But First: We’re Gonna Jump Out That Window.” – Buster Moon

Buster Moon is played by Matthew McConaughey, perhaps one of the most recognizable voice actors of the cast. His character may be small but is nothing if not determined. No matter the odds, Buster will always do whatever he needs to in order to ensure the success of his show and its stars.

When things fall through with music producer Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale), Buster and his crew decide to put the show on without him, making it necessary for the team to avoid the murderous rampage that follows. In their stubbornness, Buster and the team are even willing to leap out a nearby window in order to continue their production.

Family Ties

“Yeah, Well, Mama Always Said: ‘Gunter, You’re Not As Stupid As Your Papa!'” – Gunter

Gunter is a German pig played by comedian Nick Kroll. As overly enthusiastic as he is kind, Gunter became a favorite among thefanbase. The character has been a major part of the franchise’s marketing since the first movie, becoming synonymous with the films.

Gunter may not be Sing 2‘s most intelligent character, but he’s apparently a genius compared to his father. After selling his idea for a sci-fi show, Gunter accepts Buster Moon’s praise by remembering his own mother’s perception of his mental acuity as being at the very least greater than his father’s.

Self-Worth

“No, Sir. I’m Not A Loser. We Did What We Came Here To Do… And There Is Nothing You Can Do Or Say To Change That.” – Buster Moon

Over the course of this film, Buster Moon learns that acquiescing to the demands of show business is not the best way of achieving his dreams, especially when those demands impose moral dilemmas upon him and his friends. Eventually, he learns to stand up against such demands, coming into his own as a producer.

After a confrontation with a seething Crystal, Buster learns to reject the music producer’s insults, standing up for himself and his crew. His stance exemplifies his character development throughout the film, showing that he has become a stronger producer in the wake of his trials.

Chasing Dreams

“Anyone Who Dares Set Out To Follow Their Dreams Is Bound To Face A Lot Worse Than A Dip In The Canal.” – Nana

Nana Michaels is the patron of Buster Moon’s performing crew, who is a star herself and therefore well-acquainted with the ins and outs of showbusiness. As a more seasoned performer, she is savvier to the tricks of the trade than the bright-eyed Moon.

Nana’s role in the sequel is smaller than in the first film but no less impactful. After Buster becomes distraught at a talent scout’s rejection of his team, she reminds him that, in order to follow his dreams, he will have to face and surmount many more trials along the way.

The Right Choice

“Turns Out There’s Always A Choice. I Just Never Had The Guts To Make The Right One.” – Clay Calloway

Sing 2 was clearly one highest anticipated animated movies of the year, and delivers on the hype surrounding it, thanks to the incredible depth of emotion that the movie delivers in its storytelling. Perhaps the most impactful example of the film’s emotional relevance comes in the characterization of the retired rockstar Clay Calloway.

Calloway gradually grows more comfortable with the idea of returning to the stage over the course of his development in the movie. He comes to see that he can change the way he makes decisions and even has the potential to make the right ones so long as he is brave enough to do so.

Carry The Burden

“Clay, It’s Okay. Just Sing. Your Songs Will Carry You.” – Ash

The finale of the film depicts Buster Moon and Company’s big sci-fi production, the centerpiece of which includes a duet between Ash and Clay Calloway. However, Calloway begins to have second thoughts about his return only moments before his cue to go on stage, prompting Ash to encourage him to rely on his music to give him strength.

This moment resonates with the overall theme of the movie, telling audiences to not overthink their passion for music but to enjoy the ride which it provides. The scene is capped off with an emotional rendition of U2’s “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” ending the performance on a high note.
