The latest Skyrim Anniversary Edition update on PC, Version 1.6.323, manages to solve black screen errors but it also breaks mods, players have found after downloading the patch. This isn’t the first time The Elder Scrolls V’s new version has wreaked havoc on installed mods; given the game’s track record, it likely won’t be the last, either. Ahead of release, developers warned that Skyrim Anniversary Edition would disrupt Special Edition mods. Suffice it to say, the warnings were nothing if not correct.

Bethesda Softworks and developer Bethesda Game Studios unleashed the most recent edition in celebration of Skyrim’s 10th anniversary, which fell on November 11 of this year. In addition to a fair few graphical upgrades and load time improvements, the latest iteration of the seminal RPG came packed with fresh content including fishing, Survival Mode, the Saints and Seducers storyline, and Rare Curios Mode. These changes give newcomers yet another reason to dive in and provide Skyrim faithful with different ways to experience the classic open-world title. But, of course, it wouldn’t be a new Skryim release without growing pains.

The black screen error constitutes an issue that many a PC player has encountered upon launching Skyrim Anniversary Edition. According to a post on the game’s Steam page, Version 1.6.323 should remedy this problem, along with others related to incorrect menu text for foreign language users and broken doors in the Rielle ruin. PC Gamer reports, however, that downloading the patch additionally unlocks a fresh batch of troubles, namely those that sideline mods. This is even a problem for Special Edition players who don’t own the Anniversary Edition since the latter is an upgrade from the former. As a result, some users plan on avoiding the patch altogether. Fortunately, players who already activated Version 1.6.323 can downgrade to the Special Edition’s 1.5.97 with the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Downgrade Patcher, which itself recently received an update.

For the sake of mod users, here’s to hoping another patch will soon address the issues unearthed in the latest update. When such a fix may go live remains unknown at the time of writing. Unfortunately, waiting it out or rolling back to Skyrim’s Special Edition serve as the only options for the time being.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim originally hit store sheles for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in November 2011, unwittingly setting the stage for a generation of western open-world RPG titles. It influenced the likes of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, for instance, and remains among the list of the last decade’s most important releases.

Skyrim Anniversary Edition is out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
