Christian Gomm of Myrkur Games recreated The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim‘s Riverwood locale in Unreal Engine 5, an effort that perfectly illustrates what a full remaster on new technology could provide. Epic Games first showcased Unreal Engine 5 in May 2020 on PS5 hardware, using a real-time tech demo that depicted tight interiors and a sprawling outdoor landscape. While other studios have confirmed UE5 as their technology of choice for upcoming projects, Fortnite Chapter 3 counts as the first title on the market to put the engine to use.

Several fan-made Unreal Engine 5 projects have surfaced online in recent months. This past summer, for example, Reddit user TJATOMICA posted a brief clip of their awe-inspiring Superman project in UE5, which sees the Man of Steel leaping off a rooftop in a single bound and taking to the skies of Metropolis. Chris G, another talented artist, remade the Kvatch Gate from Oblivion. Now yet another beloved Elder Scrolls entry has received the UE5 treatment thanks to a technically-gifted fan.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

An Environment Artist at Myrkur Games, Christian Gomm recently shared footage and screenshots of their recreation of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim’s Riverwood location. The remake project was made possible by Unreal Engine 5 and its virtualized geometry system, Nanite. In an ArtStation post, Gomm divulged the environment came to life through a mixture of megascans and handcrafted substance materials and photoscanned assets. Nanite especially proved handy for increasing visual quality, evident in the fact that most of the assets on display “range in polycount from 100,000 to 15 million triangles.” YouTube compression doesn’t do the scene justice, but check out the remastered Riverwood in motion via the following video:

Suffice it to say, the above Unreal Engine 5 creation is probably what many fans would like to see from a full-blown The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim remaster. And the impressive lighting and textures alone are enough to make almost anyone long for yet another Skyrim re-release. For now, though, players will have to simply make do with gawking at Christian Gomm’s Riverwood recreation.

The groundbreaking RPG title recently reentered the spotlight for the release of Skyrim Anniversary Edition, an all-new version packing in news bells and whistles such as fishing, Survival Mode, and hundreds of Creation Club extras. Who knows, maybe in another five to ten years Bethesda will give the game a graphical overhaul for one more anniversary-themed release?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is available to play across Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
