The release of Skyrim brought with it a large amount of new lore for the Elder Scrolls series, many of which could feasibly tie into the eventual plot of The Elder Scrolls 6. Even some of the more minor questlines in Skyrim could potentially have a significant influence over the events of the timeline as the franchise moves forward.

Given that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still in its design stage according to Todd Howard, it’s unclear for the moment what exactly the story of the next game will entail. It’s probable, though, that it will be set after the events of Skyrim, given how many loose ends were left open by the ending of the game.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Skyrim is likewise the most recent on the overall timeline of the Elder Scrolls series. Although a few other Elder Scrolls games have been released since Skyrim first came out, including The Elder Scrolls Online and a couple of spin-off games, most of these were set in Tamriel’s past and didn’t continue the overall story of the franchise, nor did they answer any of the questions first posed during the events of Skyrim.

Skyrim’s Civil War & The Aldmeri Dominion

The Civil War in Skyrim introduces the battle between the Empire and the Stormcloaks, the latter of which opposes the Aldmeri Dominion’s influence over Tamriel as well as the outlawing of Talos worship. It serves as one of the main questlines throughout the game and depending on who wins there could be a major impact on the overall state of politics in Tamriel. In particular, the Aldmeri Dominion’s strength and influence could grow or diminish depending on the victor at the end of Skyrim. The Elder Scrolls 6 will almost certainly reflect this if it answers the question of who the true victor is.

The Return Of The Dragons In Tamriel

Skyrim marks the first time that dragons have been seen in Tamriel for centuries, and additionally introduces quite a few dragon characters who could feasibly return in The Elder Scrolls 6. For the time being, it’s unclear whether the remaining dragons will return as friends or foes in the next Elder Scrolls game, but some fans of the series have already speculated that Paarthurnax could make a return. Either way, the protagonist of the Elder Scrolls 6 likely won’t have as much involvement with the dragons, given it’s doubtful that they’ll act as another Dragonborn.

Skyrim’s Minor Questlines In Elder Scrolls 6

The main questlines of Skyrim aren’t the only places of the game that could have major lore implications as The Elder Scrolls 6 approaches, though. Quite a few of its secondary missions also impact the future of Tamriel, particularly in the Dark Brotherhood questline. It culminates with players being given the option of assassinating the Emperor, potentially leaving the Empire with a power vacuum. If The Elder Scrolls 6 is set in the near future, it’s possible this could remain unresolved by the time the game begins, and the Aldmeri Dominion could take the opportunity to start another war or seize more power.

There’s also the Dawnguard questline, which provides the option of blotting out the sun entirely if players side with the vampires. While it’s currently unclear what exactly the implications of this could be, especially given that there isn’t even a release date set for The Elder Scrolls 6 as of yet, its inclusion in the game could severely impact the lore of Tamriel’s timeline post-Skyrim.
