Modders have created new lock variations for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, introducing a new form of immersion and completely replacing the original overused lock model. Hundreds of Skyrim locations are accompanied by securely locked traps, doors, and chests filled with valuables that can expand the Dragonborn’s arsenal. While lockpicking is a simple task for some, master locked items are a much greater challenge, and players who wish to attempt these locks would do well to level up Skyrim‘s lockpicking skill.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim came out in 2011 and followed the long-running action role playing series set in the high fantasy fictional universe of Tamriel. Upon release, the title instantly became one of the most awarded and critically acclaimed games of all time due to its free-form gameplay and detailed open-world, which allowed for nearly limitless exploration. This reception led to the title being considered Bethesda’s most prized possession, and it has seen numerous re-releases on almost every platform in the past decade. This includes the Nintendo Switch, VR, and most recently next-gen consoles with the Skyrim: Anniversary Edition, which bundles the popular RPG with additional content, new features, and enhanced improvements.

As seen on Nexus Mods, users powerofthee and wSkeever (via PC Gamer) have created new mods that completely overhaul and change Skyrim‘s lock screen variations to give players a refreshing new take on lockpicking. Once downloaded, Security Overhaul Lock Variations and Security Overhaul Add-Ons will introduce players to new lock designs, each with its own unique animation and sounds. Based on location, these variant designs will better reflect Skyrim‘s various races, and players familiar with The Elder Scrolls‘ lore will be able to pick out which race a given lock belongs to based on visual representation. These skins will range from naturally exotic to sinister and gloomy, and can be used to both enhance immersion and rejuvenate gameplay.

Skyrim‘s new lock variations can be downloaded on any version using the Skyrim Script Extender, excluding the brand-new anniversary edition. A new patch for the latest version of Skyrim has broken mods and sidelined the popular tool that makes them available. Interested players can downgrade the Anniversary edition down to the Special Edition if they remove some of the new additions added to the game.

Modders have once again breathed life into Skryim and have introduced players to never before seen item variations that will freshen up new and ongoing adventures. Skyrim‘s new lock variations are one of the thousands of mods players can download to help the game feel new again, and despite Skyrim‘s age, it looks like modders aren’t stopping now, despite the title being a decade old.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is available to play now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
