The addition of gear from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a unique occurrence in The Elder Scrolls series, being an exclusive find in the Nintendo Switch edition of the game that was released in 2017. Aside from being a novel addition to players’ arsenals, this direct promotion of another series’ signature items marked a first for The Elder Scrolls, and could open up the door for future crossovers in The Elder Scrolls 6.

As part of the crossover, BOTW‘s Champion’s Tunic, Master Sword, and Hylian Shield are all obtainable in Skyrim. To obtain this special BOTW gear, players must gather it from a chest in the Throat of the World location or utilize a Legend of Zelda amiibo while playing. Like other weapon and armor sets in the game, this gear can be upgraded by using the mechanics from Skyrim’s Smithing skill tree. While the gear has been implemented in a way that better suits Skyrim‘s visual style, the items still stand out due to how faithfully they resemble the outfit seen in Breath of the Wild. Having a costume from another series be recreated both faithfully and officially is not something one could find in the Elder Scrolls games of the past, and it may set a new precedent for the series going forward.

Since Skyrim‘s initial release in 2011, players have pursued a number of different methods of customizing their characters. Some use the clothing available in the base game to mimic the looks of popular characters, such as dressing Skyrim’s Dragonborn like Geralt from The Witcher by utilizing similar-looking armor and hair. Others have created a variety of visual mods to drastically change the look of the character models in the PC version of the game. In contrast with the cosplay attempts and mods, the Breath of the Wild bonuses are official, visually unmistakable recreations of Link’s clothing and tools, and they can only be accessed in the Switch version of Skyrim.

Skyrim’s Zelda: BOTW Gear Is the First Direct Crossover to Occur in The Elder Scrolls Games

Prior to this crossover with the Legend of Zelda series, neither Skyrim nor any other Elder Scrolls game had included properties from another series. It might be possible for a similar crossover to be added to the upcoming Elder Scrolls 6, as with Bethesda now being a part of Xbox Game Studios, the potential is there for iconic Xbox series to be referenced. Given the quality of the BOTW gear, having these types of customization options could stop players from having to rely on mods for achieving certain looks in-game.

Time will tell if future Elder Scrolls games will include more crossover material like the Breath of the Wild gear. But until then, fans of both series can enjoy new adventures cosplaying as Link in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
