The final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate update has been announced, and it will bring the last round of balance adjustments to the game’s roster of characters. The most recent Super Smash Bros. Ultimate update was Ver. 13.0.0, which added Sora from Kingdom Hearts to the game and made several fighter balancing changes.

Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U were the first entries in the series to receive downloadable patches altering gameplay. This was viewed as a godsend by many, as the earlier Super Smash Bros. games had overpowered characters. Super Smash Bros. Brawl was perceived as a major offender because of Meta Knight’s online reign. Despite these updates, Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U were still considered unbalanced by the series community, with Bayonetta and Cloud outstripping most of the roster. Super Smash Bros.Ultimate’s patches and updates have been more effective at nerfing some of the stronger characters and building a playing field with greater balance.

It seems Super Smash Bros. Ultimate post-launch support is finally wrapping up. According to Nintendo VS on Twitter, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Ver. 13.0.1 update is “coming soon,” and it will bring the game’s final round of fighter balance updates. As with previous updates, Replay Data recorded using the previous version of SSBU will become inaccessible, so players who want to keep their replays should convert them to video before the update releases.

It’s possible more updates could be released to resolve any unexpected bugs, like Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Piranha Plant save glitch, or if a truly game-breaking situation arose with one of the characters. However, it’s surprising to learn there’s only one more Super Smash Bros. Ultimate update planned, especially as Sora has yet to receive any buffs or nerfs since launch. The pandemic shut down many major SSBU tournaments for over a year, meaning most of the Fighters Pass Vol. 2 characters have yet to be vetted by top players, so the game would likely have benefited from more updates as time went on.

On the bright side, the release of a last Super Smash Bros. Ultimate update means the community will finally be able to create a more reliable tier list for the roster. The game’s steady influx of updates meant Smash Bros. Ultimate nerfs and buffs could cause a character’s competitive viability to change overnight. Once the 13.0.1 update releases, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament data can finally rank the roster to  see which fighters come out on top.
