Sniper Elite 5 has been announced for release in 2022 by developer Rebellion. It’s been quite a while since the release of the last major entry in the series, Sniper Elite 4, which came out way back in 2017. Interestingly, in spite of its age, Rebellion still released current-gen upgrades for Sniper Elite 4 earlier this year alongside Crystal Dynamics’ action adventure game Shadow of the Tomb Raider. This new update for the 2017 title indicated that Rebellion is still interested in keeping the franchise alive, and this has been proven with the announcement of the new game.

Apart from the upgrade, Rebellion also worked on the latest installment in its Sniper Elite spinoff, Zombie Army 4: Dead War, which was released early last year. The game is set after the events of 2015’s Zombie Army Trilogy and features many of the core mechanics of both Sniper Elite and the previous Zombie Army titles. Like Sniper Elite 4, Zombie Army 4 also received current-gen upgrades for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Rebellion announced through a press release that Sniper Elite 5 will be released sometime in 2022 for Xbox Game Pass, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Epic, Steam, and the Windows Store. Sniper Elite 5 will take protagonist Karl Fairburne to France in 1944 on a mission to stop a secret project called Operation Kraken that threatens to defeat the Allies before D-Day can even happen. According to Rebellion, the game will feature real-world locations from France in 1944 and the franchise’s “largest and most immersive” maps to date.

Sniper Elite 5’s many locations will offer players multiple infiltration and extraction points along with a new traversal system to give them more options for not only approaching and taking out their targets but also exiting the area undetected. Some of the other features of the game include new weapon and ammo customization, an improved kill-cam, enhanced co-op gameplay features, an invasion style drop-in PVP feature, and more.

It’s good to see that Sniper Elite series developer Rebellion is still continually trying to push the envelope with its third-person shooter franchise. With such a large gap between Sniper Elite 4 and its sequel, fans of the franchise will most likely be expecting a similarly large gap in quality between the two titles. But with a still vague release date, would-be players will just have to wait for more news in the meantime or check out Sniper Elite VR, which was launched earlier this year and was hailed as the most immersive Sniper Elite experience.

Sniper Elite 5 is scheduled for release in 2022 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
