To celebrate Thanksgiving, SNL shared a compilation video of some of the show’s best turkey day moments throughout the years. The long-running comedy variety show is currently in the middle of its season 47 so there are certainly many moments to choose from. This year’s Thanksgiving special was hosted by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu, along with this year’s cast which includes Aidy Bryant, Michael Che, Pete Davidson, Mikey Day, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, Colin Jost, Kate McKinnon, Alex Moffat, Kyle Mooney, Ego Nwodim, Chris Redd, Cecily Strong, Kenan Thompson, Melissa Villaseñor, and Bowen Yang, the show’s first Chinese-American main cast member.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

SNL has made somewhat of a name for itself by prioritizing Thanksgiving specials. This is partially due to their production schedule, which tends to see more episodes airing close to the late-November holiday than Christmas the following month. However, Thanksgiving is also a somewhat untapped holiday market, and a time in which television (especially football games) is built into many family traditions.

On their official Twitter account, SNL posted a 10-minute compilation clip of some of their most iconic Thanksgiving moments. The iconic moments played in full include Paul Simon’s monologue dressed as a turkey from 1976, the parody music video “Back Home Ballers” from 2014, and SNL all-star Adam Sandler’s Thanksgiving song from 1992. Considering that they only selected three clips, they have enough material left in their archives to post a similar video every day all the way through until New Year’s. Check out the compilation below:

Although season 47 of SNL is currently on a short holiday hiatus, the show will return on December 11. The episode they will be picking up with will feature teen superstar Billie Eilish as both the host and the musical guest. The following episode, which is the only other one that has been officially confirmed thus far, will feature Ant-Man star and this year’s Sexiest Man Alive Paul Rudd as the host with pop singer Charli XCX as the musical guest.

This SNL compilation video is just a taste of the years and years of comedy that the show has to offer. Although it has just as many lows as highs, like any variety sketch show, it has been part of the American television landscape for so long that it has become an institution in its own right. Given even more time, perhaps the show will become a Thanksgiving tradition just as ingrained in American culture as pumpkin pie.
