Saturday Night Livehas announced the premiere date for season 47, although notable members of the cast have yet to confirm whether they’ll be back. NBC’s long-running variety series is coming off of a strong 46th entry, which included headline-grabbing hosts such as Dave Chapelle and Chris Rock. But as the season came to a close, reports surfaced that some of SNL’s most familiar faces were ready to move on.

Pete Davidson indicated in May that he may not return for season 47. The actor elaborated on those comments a month later, explaining that he has no idea whether he’d return to SNL and that the live show conflicts with his schedule. Longtime cast member Cecily Strong has struck a similar tone, admitting that her SNL future is up in the air. Now, with season 47’s debut officially set, more changes could be on the way.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

SNL uploaded a short teaser to YouTube, which reveals that the long-running variety series will premiere its 47th season on October 2. Announcements regarding hosts and musical guests are expected to come shortly. Adding to the intrigue regarding the upcoming batch of episodes is the fact that Strong, Davidson, Kate McKinnon, and Aidy Bryant have all indicated they may not return for the new season. SNL creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels is in talks with the four performers about returning. Though there is hope that they’ll all be back, according to Deadline, the conversations remain ongoing. For now, you can check out the season 47 teaser below.

All four bring their own unique strengths to the long-running television staple. Davidson is known for his contributions, which often veer into the confessional and where the comedian freely takes aim at his public persona. For her part, McKinnon has turned heads with her takes on political figures from Hillary Clinton to former Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway. As for Strong and Bryant, they’re two of SNL’s most reliable regulars and are often trusted to elevate otherwise mundane sketches with their committed performances. One potential sign that the foursome could sign on for another season is that they’ve all been allowed to work on outside projects, occasionally missing a few episodes of SNL as a result.

But, as has frequently been the case, the exit of veteran cast members allows for the emergence of new names looking to make an impression on audiences. Andrew Dismukes, Lauren Holt, and Punkie Johnson have all recently joined the sketch series as featured players. Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang are two other relative newcomers that made strong impressions in season 46. And, on the opposite end, veteran Kenan Thompson has said that he wants to be part of Saturday Night Live for many more years to come. So, it’s safe to say that the show will be in good hands regardless of any big changes.
